Were the logs in or out last year? edit: 7,8,9 is good with me, unless something unexpected comes up of course? They didn’t take them out last year because of the broken valve at the spillway

The logs were in. We were sad. BTW, does anyone know what the normal schedule is for removing them, or is "normal" a thing of the past at BB? I sure hope they're pulled out before the 7th. Smallfry and others, you finna' like it!

I’ve never fished there when the logs were out. Sounds like it would be fun exploring a few of the shoals that should be exposed when they take them out.

There three main areas of river that open up when logs are out. First is the Day Use area. About 200-300 yards of good trout water down through the ledges. Then a nice good run before it slows into the massive pool above fly shop bridge. The pool is still fishable, but canoes or kayaks are needed. Second is the area above swim beach bridge. This becomes a nice riffly shoal for about 150 yards above the bridge, sometimes even further depending on flows. Third, the water below SB bridge gets trout-ier. The water doesn't have time to warm and stagnate above the logs. BIG fish move up here in the winter - rainbows, browns, walleye, Saugeye, and even the odd gar or pickerel. They feast on dead fish out of the turbines and then move up to eat stocker rainbows and baitfish.
The other cool thing that removal of logs does is allows fish movement upstream. Some of you can remember the days when those big browns, the big kyped up rainbows, and colorful hens showed up in Evening hole and above. I know we watched a few browns make the leap over EH bridge concrete and swim up to EH. This happens ALOT more than you think..... the logs out allows them to just swim up rather than have to rest and jump. Boy it would be nice to see some spawners move in this year!

Just be careful wading from swim beach bridge up to fly shop. Super slick most years and felt with studs are nice.

Try not to wade on the light-colored limestone.

Hopefully we can make it for at least one day this year. We haven't fished since January.

I'm just ready for November and December. Maybe we will have a good fall again if they do take the stop logs out.

I just realized something. Since we’re camping at Fern this year, we’ll be able to poop comfortably. No more decrepit Hickory facilities.

See, that's what I'm telling ya! Meanwhile, I'll only have a few feet to stagger from the firepit to my wee camper. Jeff, am I correct that one can access the Day Use Area Hole directly from Fern? Seems like you can.

I think the main run is just upstream from fern.... the lower part is right underneath. I believe that is Fern anyway
