Just to confirm, Trout camp will be Dec 7-9 and everyone is staying in the Fern campground? I just want to be sure so I can get a camp site reserved. I assume tent camping is allowed in Fern, right?

Everyone, I just did a search on travelok.com for camp sites the 7-9 in BBSP and it came back with none available. Not sure if I did something wrong but Fern maybe full.

I don’t think you can reserve any in Fern. First come first served. I think the only ones you can reserve or just a few around Acorn

I think Turfdawg's correct. The only reservable sites I know of are in Buckeye campground at the other end of the park. Having said that, last year at about the same weekend (was it not?) I pulled to Fern. It was nearly empty . Reservations, arriving early, any of that , was unnecessary. I assume it will be the same this year unless the Sons of Croatia Lodge in Erie PA have scheduled their annual festival at Broken Bow State Park and they all plan to show up on Thursday the 6th in their 1960's vintage travel trailers and stay at Fern. In that case we may have to fight them.

I will sic Magick on them if they show up. He looks more terrifying than he actually is.

If y’all end up having to fight for a spot in Fern, I can be there for moral support. Plus, I can bring hippie beer.

I'm not sure we want to know. Agree because someone already said they stocked the brown bass

So for those who did not make it last year, trout camp looks something like this. People start showing up Friday and picking out a tent site. When you get to Fern, look for the hand painted sign that says Trout Camp and has a trout on it. The fire’s already going and a few of us have already been fishing. Waders hanging from a tree air-drying, rods still strung. Beverages in hand, adult and otherwise. Smoke curling off the end of a Cuban seed toro. Couple of grills get lit later on, charcoals get right, steaks, burgers, whatever you brought gets tossed on the grill. Jonbo backs his trailer in and joins the party with his pal Johnnie W. As more logs are tossed in the fire to ward off December’s chill, Darrelno9 reminds us that this is considered shirt sleeves weather in North Dakota. A cool Frenchman shows up after dark and cooks some camembert cheese and a couple of baguettes in the fire. Couple of bottles of wine. Danimal is delighted and has waited a year for more of this cheese and wine. People from this board sharing fishing reports and telling fish stories, some may even have a glimmer of truth and a photo to back them up. Campfire smoke, lots of laughs. Also that night, Smallfry shows up with a bottle or two of firewater. The party is on. Next morning, those who didn’t drink are up early, brewing coffee in a couple of big percolators over a Coleman stove, no doubt banging around and making way too much noise. Coffee up, waders on, few of us head to that morning’s spot. Jeff has his bottle of Coke and Magick is ready for a walk. MIRVc17 has already been in the river for an hour and caught 5 fish. Campfire smoke still in the air, early winter’s crisp air in Beavers Bend State Park, Kiamichi country. Some head to the Beavers Bend Fly Shop to buy some flies and fresh tippet, others just to say hi to Eddie and Roberta. Park is mostly empty of people, just the way we like it. Man I can’t wait for Trout Camp.

Perfect synopsis, Hank! I especially can't wait for Gui's fire-cooked stew, whatever it's called, and camembert or whatever it is. You can't get that stuff anywhere. Fishing's great, but hanging out at the fire is best!

All that sounds great, hankinsfly, except for the part about mirvc17 catching only 5 fish in an hour. I know better than that.
And if I remember correctly, people started showing up Thursday afternoon. Three night of sleeping along the flowing river in that refreshing fall air are certainly better than two.

Hah... I’ll whip up some of those secret-sauce “Taepodong Midges” as I called them. Key to success in the morning. Also, if Gui doesn’t show up with that stew, bread and cheese, we might as well cancel this whole thing. It won’t be worth it.

If the temps are mild this year, maybe those who tie might be interested in bringing their vises, and some materials for a couple of patterns?
If its cold again, tying in front of the fire would be nice.

Gui is required to be there with his cheese and wine. Wife this time, too. Hankinsfly - you forgot about the PoPo giving Magick and I grief about the leash laws. Never mind the poachers, marijuana, and brown trout on stringers.
Gonna be a blast!

I’ll try to put a travel case together. I need to do that anyway for my Colorado trip.

Joined the Forum last October after our first trip to the LMF (and first time fly fishing since leaving Arizona in 1992). Enjoyed reading about Trout Camp 2017. Would like to join y'all this year if I can get away. Will it be strictly camping or will y'all allow cabin dwellers? (Camping is hard on the ole back). Also, does the Fly Shop rent waders? Boots and Waders are the last items on my "to buy" list.
