In listening to an Orvis flyfishing podcast, someone suggested that early morning fishing for trout was a waste of time. When I come to OK, I usually get started at sun up. Am I wasting my time?

Not trying to be an ass, but forget the podcasts- get out and fish and make your own conclusions.

There's also a whole episode of that podcast dedicated to the advantages of being there at dawn.
As always, it depends on the specific circumstances of the day, and its very hard to predict.

Not sure who on the podcast said that, but there are definitely some advantages to fishing for trout at dawn or dusk. But it can depend on where you're fishing and what time of year it is.
Winter on the LMFR is different from fishing the South Platte tailwater in Colorado in winter. Guides there would not recommend fishing at dawn because 1) it's cold (air and water temp) 2) the bug life isn't happening until it warms up some 3) the fish are lethargic and probably mostly just holding in deeper water rather than looking for food. When the bugs get active, the fish get active (generally). Guides have recommended mid morning to early/mid afternoon (warmest part of the day) as the best times during those winter conditions...
That being said, I love fishing at dawn. For me it's the whole deal of getting up at dark, drinking some fresh brew, getting ready and being in the water as early as I can. I expect not to do well, but I don't care. I'm there to go fishing, not to catch fish. Of course I don't like to get skunked either.

If you’re fishing the LMF, especially the heavily prsssured areas like evening hole, you need to get up at dawn to make sure of a couple things, 1) you can get a spot to fish and 2) you aren’t the 23rd person to throw a fly at that fish that day. I’ve been in the evening hole early in the morning where the bite has been pretty good and by 9:30 they won’t even look at your fly. Once you get 91 anglers shoulder to shoulder in the evening hole flinging fly lines and shiny rods around, fish get can sense that and become a little more wary. If you wait to start fishing the LMF until mid morning, there’s a good chance they’ve already seen a couple size 20 zebra midges that morning. Plus with clear water, low light gives you an advantage.

I wouldn't say that fishing is worthless that early since I've caught plenty of fish early. My typical experiences on the LMF are steady/slow until a hot mid morning bite, then slow until later afternoon.

I'm usually in the parking lot ready to fish before sunrise and at the Grateful Head by 11:30 ... and I've usually made new friends by noon. Fly fishing for trout is like weight training. What works for some may not work for others. Figure out what works for you and enjoy the fishing. Besides, there's nothing better than watching the river come to life. Especially in the fall and winter, when the Goldeneye's return

I know, right? If I'm too lazy to get out of waders I'll just go to Shady Oaks for a burger, they don't seem to mind.

Sammich, chips, n coffee on the tailgate works good too. I usually will go to town for a late lunch on the warmer days to try and pass the warmest part of the day, then make my way back to a stretch I'll usually fish the remainder of the evening, but with this cooler weather coming in and less daylight hours, you're right on the money.

I mean, pizza is always a good choice though. Grateful Head is unusually slow, even for pizza. Bunch of dead heads in there.

You ain't lying! Seriously though, have you ever seen someone eating pizza (or nachos) who isn't happy?! I usually call my order in right when I step out of the river, partly cause by stomach thinks my esophagus has been cut by that point, but mostly because they operate on 420 Oregon time.

See, you take your pizza seriously. That’s a great idea- call it in ahead of time. I wonder if they deliver to the campground? FYI- Bush’s Pizza in Bull Shoals does deliver pizza to the campground in town, right to your campsite.

Sorry brother Jeff, but someone died, got to go to the funeral. But hey, you can have pizza AND browns! There is a great pizza place in Cotter across the highway from Dallys.
