Could anyone give me an approximate depth of the river? Is it foardible? Just trying to get an idea of depth to get flies to the bottom. I know there will be holes that are deeper, like is the 40ft hope that deep? Lol

Yes the river can be forded in spots. Be careful as I lost 3 head of oxen trying to ford the river last year and one of my men got cholera and didn’t survive the winter.

I busted a wagon wheel and fell in on more than one occasion.

I lost a team of sled dogs when the ice broke some years back -- barely made it out of there with my life..

Best stock up on water barrels, food, and bullets at Beavers Bend Livery. It’s a hard trail. Don’t want to have to rely on squirrel meat.

LOL....sorry man couldn’t help myself. The river is probably on 2-3 ft average depth. It’s not real wide and can be crossed in most places in the park with the exception of cold hole and some parts of spillway creek. Nymph depth will vary base on where you’re fishing, but 1.5 times the depth of the water is a good starting point, so at least 4-5 ft in most places.

Haha I would be mad if you didn’t take that opportunity!! Lol thank you, not sure why I was expecting it to be deeper lol

Also, besides the perils of the trail, do NOT step on the light colored limestone bottom. It is very slick.

I fell off a cliff on (Take A) Spillway Creek and broke my rod and my a$$. This is true. Very small cliff, but still, it hurt, especially my feelings.

The 40 ft. Hole stretch along the campground is not 40 ft. deep. Just the same, as with anywhere else you wade to fish common sense dictates that if what is in front or around you doesn't seem entirely safe to wade and you are left to guess about depth or current or a sure footing and the little voice in your head says "Mmmm, I dunno about that, doesn't look right" then it most certainly isn't.

I usually get in a few good falls each year. I've ruined two DSLR's and an iPhone. A wading staff is a solid investment when crossing swift water over slippery rocks.

After talking to a local guide on the LMFR a few weeks ago, he was telling me that he took his kayak with depth finder out to the '40ft hole' and said the deepest part he measured was 21'.
