Nice job Darrell, and nice fish. How's that Holographic Frenchie? I don't have the exact materials, but some tinsel I have should work well enough... I tied a couple of Perdigons today (lost a couple over the last couple of weeks--I hate losing H230s > ), also some Medallion Midges, a BH Rubberleggs, and a soft hackle BWO that got destroyed after too many fish... PS, I lost one of those Slumpbusters you tied for me (I dropped it in the river and couldn't find it), but I've been using the others and the fish like 'em...

Thank you! That's the first time I had fished a Holo Frenchie. I tied a few in size 18 with the plan of using them on a small Hopper/Dropper setup. However, I didn't get that far and decided to tie one on as the dropper in a Euro rig - BAM - several hookups with all on the dropper. I actually had the exact materials (from Dakota Angler, of course) so I stayed true to the pattern all the way down to the mottled bronze-colored beads.
I lose A LOT of flies in these Missouri creeks. There are so many fallen trees and root wads in the deepest pools so it's hard not to hook them. That's where the fish are so it's kind of unavoidable.
I've learned a trick (the hard way) for retrieving dropped flies ... I stick the handle end of my net down into the water and dredge the bottom with the magnetic release. It grabs a lot of them without even getting my sleeve wet. And it’s about the only thing that works when the sediment gets stirred up.

That’s a great tip for using the net—I’ll remember that ! Going to Waterton Canyon again this morning. No Euro’ing for me today.

As our almost famous but ridiculously quiet friend once said “the tug is the drug”. Feeling the bites with a tight line is exactly that. And those stream-born Missouri trout take off like rockets when they hit! Really enjoy dry flies too though. Streamers not so much. Maybe I’ll learn how to fish those better when I get older. lol

I'm glad you had a good trip, Darrell. I definitely have to find a way to get to Missouri to fish sometime. The McCloud strain rainbows are on my bucket list. However you missed us at the LMF. David, Jeff and I combined for... uh, we combined for..., uh... <<we got skunked>>. Not the right time of year there, to be sure. Actually, I think Jeff went back in the evening and did better. BUT... I'm here to tell you that David cooks an awesome steak. So, as we always do, we managed to have a great time, thanks to David's hospitality and generosity. Can't wait for winter!

Oh my, that's rough! And I thought my days were a little slow. Fall and winter fishing will definitely be better. Yes, I know all about David's steaks and hospitality. They are the best!

Seriously, though, the river fished well today – stockers aside.

OK, I'll try my luck: purple? Ding, early bird gets the worm!! Hehe! I’ll trade the flies for tips on fishing with soft hackles at the next trout camp (or if we meet riverside before). I always tell myself I should try, but then once it’s time to tie one on I think I just chicken out

Are the temps good yet, or still flirting with 70?

Are the temps good yet, or still flirting with 70? I measured 58 degrees in Little Piney Creek and that was upstream from where Lane Spring dumps in.

Last winter 22 olives with black hackle did pretty good, ugh, mirvc17 got me all messed up thinking about small flies now.

From the recent rains, Crane Creek is flowing pretty well again. There was a time late this summer where the section north of the city park was completely dry. I have heard that this happens once in a while, mainly due to reduced runoff and the porous rock bed that it flows over. Here's a shot from yesterday which shows a fairly nice flow. There's a deep hole in the run near the end of this pic where I hooked a big fish but I wasn't able to get him to my net. LDR. One of the hardest parts about fishing this creek is finding water deep enough and fast enough to hold the big fish. If you can't find deep fast water then the big fish scatter as soon as you approach and for sure when your fly hits the water. A lot of those deep holes are where roots of trees along the edge of the creek have washed out underneath. Here is what I consider a fairly nice one (McCloud River Redband, of course) I found in a not-too-deep but fast-flowing hole near a tree root. I have not seen many rising fish on my trips up and down the creek so I've mainly stayed the course with Euro Nymphing. My favorite flies have always worked well here (Sexy Walt's, Mohawk PT, and even a plain ol' Gold Ribbed Hare's Ear) but, in particular, the Tungsten Surveyor and Holographic Frenchie patterns have worked exceptionally well. If you get tired of searching and not finding big fish, you can always run one of those flies through any small hole, depression, or short riffle you can find. It seems like they all hold one of these gems. There's just no arguing with how pretty these little guys are. I caught several this size and one even fit completely inside the palm of my hand! Now if they can just hang on long enough to grow a little ... until they produce some more of their own - that's about 3 years I guess.

Nice fish darrell. Have only been once a few years ago and there wasn’t much water in that creek. Hope to get back some time when there is a little water.

This post made me remember I never posted about Aaron and I’s last trip to the current in June. Caught this nice brown right at the parking lot at tan vat and lost a rainbow below the park at least this big. Didn’t post at the time bc the forum was out of space.

Darrell, that's a nice McCloud/Crane Creek rainbow! Good work, son. I'm jealous. Thanks! We need to have a group outing at Crane Creek sometime. We should be able to find some McCloud Redbands. Bring your Euro Rod!!! Maybe we can hit the Roaring River as well. The two places aren’t too far apart and there's a nice lodge and campground at Roaring.
