We had a WONDERFUL time and thanks to everyone that helped. I would like to give a special shoutout to Grant for the cabin recommendation. It was right on the San Juan river with great fish right outside the cabin door. Incase we have never met I am the one that is way short for my weight. We had a fabulous trip and I caught some of the prettiest fish I have ever caught. Several very nice Browns were caught not 50 yards from the cabin door. I caught my first Brook Trout on our guided trip and caught by far the prettiest Rainbow I have ever caught not very far from town. We hired Scott Taylor for our guide and I am very glad we did. He took us on Turkey Creek. That meant a 5 mile ride on a mountain road then parking at the trail head with a 35 minute 4wd 4wheeler trip with a little hiking along the creek. Absolutely gorgeous with Brookies, par mark Browns and par mark Rainbows. I still need to catch a Cutthroat. My son in law, wife and cousins wife decided they all loved fly fishing for trout. I have been trying to get my wife to go with me for some time but she never has. Well, she finally decided to fish right off the back deck and caught some fish so now she wishes she would have done more fishing. We also had fun driving some of the roads/trails. Our favorite was a 12 mile [one way] trip up East Fork road to Quartz Meadow. That trip was beautiful running pretty much beside the East Fork of the San Jaun up to 9000 plus feet.

Forgot to thank JP. Those Tungsten Rainbow flies were my best producer. Even the little fellows liked those. Wife, cousin, cousins wife and myself all caught fish on them.

Thanks for the great report and the great photos Bill! Yeah, sure was nice n' convenient to simply step off the back deck and right into the river and fish. Fond memories of the place. *sigh*
As for the sideways photos all ya gotta do is log into the website and then click on them and they display large and proper.

Turfdog,
Awesome! Glad to hear those flies worked out for you! I only have a couple in my euro nymph box but maybe I should tie up some more. Looks like some incredible small stream fishing.
<nevermind, saw this in other post>
How do like that Nomad net? Aren't they sweet?! They make a newer version now that also incorporates kevlar.

I love that net. I'm so glad I bought it. I am going to wrap the basket end with paracord like most all the guides I have seen with these nets and I am also going to buy the end protecter from Fishpond because I have been using it as a wading staff also.

Oh, people are using para-cord to protect the basket end? That's a good idea! I have been using 2-3 layers of black electrical tape to protect against scratches.
I'll consult the google machine to see how people do it...

Hmm..more thoughts on para-cord wrapping... when it gets wet it will retain water and add weight (not much, but still)...and the surface is somewhat rough = better chance of rubbing slime off of fish.

I have been told by several people they like the para-cord because when they jam the front into the water they don't have to worry about hitting it on rocks and such. I just kind of liked the ideal and thought the grip for using it as a staff would be nice also.

Dawg - I will be up there in 5 days! Our first stop is South Fork, but I will be fishing along Wolf Creek Pass (Pass Creek, Park Creek, Beaver Creek and South Fork Rio). The San Juan drainage is unfortunately not that good for Cutties. About 10 miles from your cabin you can get into some Rio's pretty easy. Great fish! Looks like a great time. I know you can't wade in over 3 feet of water cuz it comes over your chest waders . Did you like Upper SJ and Quartz? Did you fish in town for the big stockers? Did you see the bikini hatch in town? Thanks for the pics, I can't wait to take some of my own. If we ever move up there, I will have to consult you on jeeps and ORV's. Sounds like the whole family did some fly fishing - that is fantastic. My wife promised me 3 whole days plus a few evenings on our trip. We have Peter in Lake City on Sept 8th. I hope to have the same success you did! Great write up Bill.

I'm glad you had a great trip, Turf! This conversation is a little frustrating for me, though. I have a permanent place to stay in Durango. My sister has a vacation home there, now. But I can't take off until November. By then, the fishing really isn't that good in that area. About all you have is the San Juan below the dam. I tried it last year and didn't like it that much. I'd rather stay around here and fish the LMF, Bull Shoals, the Little Red, rather than travel 1000 miles to fish basically the same thing. Welp, you take the good with the bad. Here in SW AR, I'm in driving range of a bunch of good tailwater fishing, but I'm further from Colorado than everyone else.

Oh, it's awesome, indeed. Don't get me wrong. We'll probably go again next (not this one) Thanksgiving. It's a little frustrating though, to be in a fly-fishing mecca area -out of season!

The Animas can be good in November if a warmer fall season is in effect. The uncompahgre below ridgway is great for big fish if the pass is still open (Million dollar highway). Thanksgiving is usually pushing winter though.

I did fish the Animas for a while on our honeymoon. Didn't catch a thing, with plenty of mayflies hatching. I think the universe did not let me catch any fish, however, because I would have fished for too long had they been biting.
