Been on vacation this last week, this was our fishing vacation. Wife and I decided to try some trout fishing somewhere different than the LMF this time, so we decided on the Little Red River. Stayed at Lindsey's Resort, pretty neat little place right on the river. Paid for an $85 room and got upgraded to a $200 cabin, even let us stay in it an extra night for the same price. We stayed Tue-Thu so the resort was pretty empty(which I like).
On to the fishing. I am a bait fisherman trying to learn to fly fish. Went out with Peter on the LMF earlier this year and loved it, but I still am not sure what I am doing. I already had all the fly rods, flies, and equiptment that was left to me by a family member and after out LMF trip I went out and bought some decent waders and boots. I tried to fly fish, went to the catch and release areas, tried some different flies, but never had any luck. Heven't even thrown a fly rod since our trip with Peter so my fly casting technique was lacking to say the least. I need another trip with Peter or someone experienced to learn more.
So since I wanted to catch some fish, and take a few home to eat I switched up to bait fishing. As many know, this river fluxuates daily with generation. You can stand at the waters edge in the morning, and in the evening that same spot is 4ft under water. Our cabin had a private dock, but even at high water it wasn't very fishable just due to the moss. We mostly bait fished in the JFK park area. I can't comment on the fly fishing since I suck at it, but the bait fishing was outstanding. I caught my first ever brown, a 15 inch. My wife caught the big fish on the trip, a 17in beautiful brown. I was really supprised with the average size rainbows we were catching, majority were 14-15 inches with a few smalls here and there. There were times I couldn't cast without catching a fish. Really enjoyed the LRR. Won't replace the LMF for me just because of distance, but will definately be back. Maybe by then I will be able to fly fish and somewhat know what I am doing.
We actually stopped at the LMF on our way back through on Friday and fished for about 3 hours before heading home. Was supprised at some of the changes near the washed out bridge that I guess they are working on replacing, the water in the spillway just before the bridge moves faster than it used to. Saw plenty of bait fishermen fishing just past the bridge were it turns into the red zone. We caught a few decent fish and headed home.
