My dad is from there and I have a significant number of aunts, uncles, and cousins that still live there so I have extensive experience with the place for the last 35 years Unique Small town that feels bigger than it is because of the huge number of tourists in the summer Lots of historical type stuff to see The actual town is on the desert plateau to the west of the mountains The view of the mountains from town is beautiful There are lots of fishing opportunities: Cimmarron river is about 45 minutes east of town (lots of browns) Rio Costilla is about an hour and a half north (cutty heaven) Rio Grande is about 30 minutes north of town (for the easiest access at the John Dunn Bridge) Red River is about 30 minutes north of town (bigger browns and bows, doesn't fish well until late summer or winter when there's no snowmelt or rain runoff) Rio Hondo is about 20 minutes north of town (smaller stream with browns, goes all the way from the ski valley to the Rio Grande) What else do you want to know? I can probably answer any question you have.

I need to spend more time on the Hondo. Trickle of a creek that flows off the ski mountain. Supposedly has some impressive hatches and browns. My recommendation for the fishing is to drive the short distance up to Questa, then east to the wild rivers rec area, which is public land at the confluence of the red and the rio. I would concentrate on the Rio, personally, but also walk up the red one day and fish the pockets and pools. Some nice cutt bows here. Wild browns and cutt bows in the Rio. One of my favorite places on Earth here at the confluence. Even just hanging out on La Junta Point staring at the scenery and gorges is worth the trip.... but who here would make the trek just for that? Also, the Rio Peublo de Taos is begging for my attention. Haven't do so yet. Very close to Taos, jut south of town. And Taos itself has all kinds of neat hippy art exhibits and food without gluten and that kind of stuff.

Whale poop Sounds like a better place to hang than fish because of the driving to the fishing locations.

Bill - Taos great to hang for family while fishing is 30 minutes to an hour away. Angel Fire is nearby, hiking to wheeler peak with a fishing rod is just plain fun.

Sounds like Taos is better fishing that South Fork, CO. My son in law is supposed to take me fishing in N New Mexico next summer. I am definitely hitting NM next summer and will keep this thread in mind.
Thanks for the great replies.

I've seen the link to that place...300$ per night...but there is also a 150$ cleaning fee, $110 service fee and taxes will be over 100 as well... so for a few days, you're looking at over 1200$... if you have enough people that might be OK...

Yeah, it's one of those deals you need a good amount of people to spread the cost. I think it would be an awesome place to stay and you get to fish water that is untouched by most. When are you thinking of heading there?
Don't forget to drive down river--there are a gazillion places to pull over and fish. Good log jams, good pools, riffles, etc. There is also private water in Ute Park (Cimarroncita), but I've not looked into how to access it--I think some of the guide services can get on it. It's a nice big open area that's beautiful. Most of the river downstream of where you'll be is all in the forest, but beautiful as well. It can be hard to make normal casts and I HIGHLY recommend a Euro nymphing leader and going tight-line.
Doc Thompson (High Country Anglers) who I've listened to on Podcasts might have access to the private water.
I respect him and his knowledge, but his site says: "Expect to fish dry flies, dry-droppers and the occasional nymph." Sorry, but this makes me laugh.. I think you'll find nymphing to be the most productive method and you'll do even better tight-lining vs an indicator. I easily tripled my catch rate.
If you need a Euro leader, I can tie you up one or you can get one of Devin Olson's from tacticalflyfisher.com ($10.95) . One leader is probably all you'll need.

Holy Waters you will have the river to yourself and maybe a few other guests. If you have enough family to cover the house expense, do it. Easy access to Eagle Nest, Angel Fire, and you can make a trip to the Red River as well if you want something new. JP will invite himself probably He's the Cimarron Guru on here.....

You can access the holy water through Solitary Angler guide service. You have to pay the normal guide cost for a day/half day plus an additional rod fee. I've done Cimarroncita before - I went through Dos Amigos anglers. They have a shop in Taos and a shop in Eagle Nest. It's nice water, but don't expect any big fish. A 15 incher felt like a monster there (we were going with a 2wt setup). It's easy, calm meadow water. It's generally very shallow, with a few 3 ft deep bend pools. It was fun action throwing big yellow stimulators to happy little browns. All of these attached pictures are from Cimmaroncita:

Some nice, open water there. Not a whole lot of that on the Cimarron. I've caught lots of dries in the Cimarron.

One of the best things about NM is the solitude that you can find on the small streams in the area. For some awesome pocket water, check out the Pueblo river (really a small stream) on HWY 151 coming into Taos from the south. Great dry fishing for browns and bows in one of the highest concentrations of fish per mile I've ever seen on a stream it's size.
Like others on here, I've fallen in love with the Valle Vidal and Rio Costilla. The type of fishing and scenery makes that spot truly one of a kind. It's worth the nine hour drive by itself.

I would definitely hit up the Valle Vidal. This will be the last year to fish it for a while. They are doing a fish kill to wipe everything out so it can go back to just a cutthroat stream. If you have been there this year, they put in a small dam that will prevent other species from making it up stream from that point. They expect it to take at least 3 years to get a good population of cutts in there, but I think that's a little overoptimistic.

I mean it's a good thing in the end, but that really sucks for a while.

If this happens for me it will be late next year again around Aug/Sep.
It's really going to be hard to try another spot since we had such a great cabin in Pagosa Springs.

OK, this is some BS. Was inquiring about the booking and found out the fishing there was private and DOESN'T come with the cabin. If you want to fish you have to pay the guide plus a rod fee per angler plus they said the flows have been so low the last couple of years that they haven't fished this area. I think for $1500 for 3 dang nights they would let you fish.
I'M OUT
