Anyone that fishes LMFR fished the Little Mo in Arkansas? How is the fishing compared to LMF? It’s almost the same distance for me to go to LMFR as it is to go to Little Mo. looking at having 2 options for fly fishing and looking at hearing everyone’s opinions or comparisons of the two.

I went there once two years ago. Only fished a couple of spots. I think one spot was close to the dam, the other was down a ways in a walk-in area. The water looked great near the dam but no fish. The walk in area was loaded with tiny trout- caught about 30-40 7-10" inch trout. It would definitely be worth another look sometime. Some good aquatic bug life, which seems to be a common theme with Ouachita mntns waters. I'd be interested in walking into the Pike and chasing natives too.

Can't speak for the lower Little Mo (below the dam) because I've never been there. But from what I've HEARD, you have much more opportunity for larger fish on the Mtn. Fork. The Albert Pike area (above the lake) is worth visiting at least once. It's one of the most beautiful places in Arkansas (though a little "creepy" since the tragedy that occurred there), and they stock some decent sized trout in the winter. And as hankinsfly pointed out, the native smallies are present. There's better smallie fishing the further downriver from the recreation area you can get, and even better yet on the next section down below the main hwy crossing.

The Little Missouri below the Lake Greeson Dam is stocked from something like November till about May at about 5 access points, from the Park next to the Dam, to the Low Water Bridge just outside of Murfreesboro. Outside of those months, it's kind of too warm for trout at any of the access points except for the Park. Trout live year round at the Park. It's unclear if they do any further down. The flow in the Lil' Mo' is maybe 50% of say, the Evening Hole at the very lowest release, if that. That said, there are a number of fun spots to fish and it's rarely crowded. PM me if you ever decide to go and I can tell you more.

I just wanted everyone to know that the Little Missouri tailwater is "going off" right now. I was saying in the previous post that it has a very low flow compared to tha LMF. I should have qualified that. It normally has that low flow. This winter however, -something about some work being done at the dam- they've "kicked it up a notch". Boom! It's been flowing a lot more like the LMF. I have no idea how long that will go on for, but currently it's pretty nice. And the fish ARE biting. Those bloodworms like Flyfisherman was showing us always work well on the Lil' Mo', also little midges and soft hackle mayflies.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I had a great time at LMFR so I’m hoping to make a trip to AR to try Little MO out. Of course I’m coming back to LMFR.

I've only ever fished the Little Missouri above Murfreesboro, and below the dam. The fishing was fine, however I would choose the LMFR over this seasonal tailwater any day. The LMFR is year-round, so any time invested into learning this river system and how to catch it's trout will far out-weight the seasonal tailwater of the Little Mo. Besides, the LMFR at BB is far more technical and diverse water structure. In the end, investing your time in the LMFR will make you a better fly fisherman than the seasonal Little Mo.

I fished it a couple weeks ago with Jonbo, Jeff, and Todd. I had a great time and definitely would suggest making a trip. My dad and I fished all 5 public accesses below the park in two days and probably caught 100 trout between the two of us. It was downright silly at times. Maybe the fishing is better right now due to increased flows but think I’ll still go back to check it out next year.
To be honest with you, I think the LMF and Little Mo fish pretty similarly. They’re pretty close geographically, part of the same mountain range (if you can call it that), have a lot of the same bugs hatching and a lot of the same flies will take fish on either river.
LMF is more technical in that the fish in the LMF get pounded. Those fish see a lot of flies and fishing gets more difficult because of it. Plus side is there are some big holdover bows in the LMF. Wouldn’t necessarily call it year round fishing at the LMF. I mean you can fish the LMF May-October but it’s not advisable. It’s a complete zoo in the summer months and water temps are right on the borderline of being too hot for trout and I feel like you stress them out too much to have any kind of decent mortality rate in the summer.
Little Mo won’t have nearly the holdover population that the LMF has, but we caught some fish that looked like they had been in the river for a while. Definitely more of a catch a ton of truckers type of place. I’ll post a pic of one in a second. 2 of the 5 accesses we went to we didn’t see another person at. Even the popular accesses weren’t really all that crowded. Nice to have a little backcasting room for a change.
Personally I like to see and fish new water. Gets kind of boring fishing the same 1/2 mile stretch of water every time out. I’d say Little Mo is definitely worth a look, if nothing else just to see some new water.

Pic lf probably my best fish from that trip. Not huge, maybe 16 inches or so, but nice color and white tipped fins. May have just been brood stock dumped in the river or could be holdover don’t know.

Lil' MO'is flooded right now, and probably for 2 or more weeks to come. Water came over the Spillway over the weekend. They have a couple of gates wide open probably running 1500 cfs, or so, would be my guess.

The attached fish was pretty mature - loved the color. I caught several like this- 13-15”.

jonbo I’m looking at trout streams beyond the LMF since it’s running a bit high at the moment. How is the Little Missouri fishing currently, also how is the flow? Thanks,

River completely changed with the flood from what I hear. They had a few days of over 10,000 CFS flowing down that tiny waterway. Not sure how the recent rains affected it.
I enjoyed my day over there. I think I caught 70+ fish. About 30 standing in one spot once I found they liked size 20 RS2's. They seem to stock a little better brand of fish over there. Several I caught looked like Todd's and Dain's above. Nothing over 16", but most between 11-14". It's pretty good water and each likely fishy place did indeed have fish.

I'm in Arkansas right now and am heading home tomorrow. I plan to stop and fish the Little MO on the way back. Are there any places to pick up some rs2s. I originally planned to fish Taneycomo, but they are running too much water. I need some flies and had planned on stocking up in Branson.

jonbo how is the Lil Mo fishing these days? I’m going up there at the end of November when the weather seems right. I love that place. It is where I learned to fly fish. Being from Louisiana, it is the closest place for me to go. I wouldn’t mind fishing with some of you guys there.

Fly, I see where you asked me about the Lil' Mo' back in August. Sorry for not responding. l sometimes concentrate on the "General" discussion section to the exclusion of the others and fail to notice them when they appear. In any case, though, I basically don't fish the LM in summer and fall. Then, in November, I'm concentrating on getting ready for my annual Thanksgiving excursion, madly working on my pest control route. So, it's usually near Christmas that I might slip away to fish the Lil' Mo' at Low Water Bridge when I should be working (shhh!). I actually can't tell anyone a thing about the LM even now at the beginning of December. Sorry for slipping up. Anyone desiring info on how the LM is fishing, go here: Jeff Guerin's LM web-site
Go to "The Latest" to see his most recent report.
