What are your plans for fishing trips this summer?
We're looking at a trip to Gunnison, CO that would include a 1 or even 2-day float through the Black Canyon section. There are many other fishing possibilities in that area, including small streams and high-elevation lakes. Seeking advice from anyone with experience in the Gunnison area.
My main concern right now is that the Gunnison Basin has only received 59% of their normal snow pack so far this winter!

We were planning on Yellowstone in the fall, but due to buying a house we're going to stay closer to home his year. I'd like to get over to NM or S CO in summer, but other than that, it's all bass for me. And I have no experience with the Gunnison. Golfer Jeff ought to be chiming in on this one.

Snow is light everywhere in CO except the NE corner. While it could be a detriment later in the summer, June and July could be outstanding. earlier than normal summer flows, lower flows on tailwaters, and earlier bug activity. If the Black Canyon doesn't work out, check the Gorge or even the Gunni right thru town. I have done both, but not the Black Canyon. Hit the Taylor C&R for sure. A trip up to Ruby Anthracite and Anthracite is fun. And of course, the Lake Fork and Lake City not too far away If you don't have it already, a book by Doug Dillingham, "FLy fishing the Gunnison Country" is a good tool. Peter and guides up there frown on it a bit because he gives away some local knowledge. I think the wife and I are splitting into two trips up there this summer. One in July, the other in early September. FLows will have something to do with where we decide to go. I would like to do Durango for one trip. If we drive, the Conejos valley or Arkansas Valley may be in play. I already have S. Missouri in March/April, Calgary in late July, and Uncompahgre in October ready to go. Hope that helps!

I plan on getting a cabin in the creede/s. fork area last week of July and fishing everything I can. Other than that I try to focus on smallmouth in the summer. I’m sure I’ll make a trip or two to Missouri and Arkansas this summer for smallies.
Don’t much about fishing the gunnison except that black canyon float is a bucket lister. Hope the flows cooperate with you.

I’m heading to Hawaii (hopefully for one of the many 8lb+ bones) and then running all around northeastern OK and Northwestern Ark for smallies

I've been to the Gunnison area the past several years in early September. As Jeff said, the Taylor C&R is a must. My ideal day is a 3 or 4 weight rod on mountain creeks so plenty of options in the area including Spring Creek and the upper Taylor in Taylor Park(and the surrounding creeks; amazing views of the Collegiate Peaks). I've read about other creeks above blue mesa reservoir but haven't searched those out yet. Taylor canyon is a beautiful area to fish with plenty of public access (tons of fish in this stretch but I haven't had much success). Lake City is an easy drive (less than a hour) from Gunnison and well worth a day (or 3) to fish the Lake Fork or any of the surrounding creeks. Other than the Taylor C&R area and Taylor canyon, I will fish dry/dropper rigs all day long. Love it. Some recommendations: Island Acres - 50s/retro style motel (PC for old) but clean, affordable, comfortable, plenty of room, and kitchens. great base camp in my book. My wife wouldn't like it but great for a guys trip. Mario's - good pizza and pasta, casual place Gene Taylors - carries all the flies, gear, and recon you could ask for (and plenty of wish list items) Packer Saloon (Lake City) - good menu, great outdoor space. Cool spot to hang out after a long day with good food and several drinks. Sportsman (Lake City) - great fly shop and I hear there's a world class guide that works out of there too A few creek fish from the last trip: - Michael

I am going to Montana in August and will take time to get fishing in there. Until then I'm going to divide my time between fishing for bass in farm ponds and coming to the LMF at least once a month.

Heading to Heber Springs in May for a long weekend to try that out. I am hoping to head up to Colorado to visit a friend in July or August and head up to his hunting place in Southern Wyoming near the Colorado border and do a little fishing in that area (little snake and some smaller streams) too. Hope it all plays out ok.

I've caught my personal best Brown from this tailwater, not to mention many healthy rainbows like this one from my last trip. If you like LMFR on a good day, you'll love The Little Red. Wishing you all the best!

Was going to Montana, but now pivoting to Central CO. I will hit N NM in June before the CO trip.
That is a crazy gorgeous trout FlyandStream. Maybe I can catch a trophy one day.

Finally, the date is nearing for my trip to Heber Springs. Can't wait to get my feet wet and do some fishing next weekend. Hopefully have some pictures to share. Not looking forward to a 9 hour drive, but its worth it. Just fire up the audible app and listen to some books on the way.

Seegars: I've done my best at LRR on the most drab little charcoal gray sowbug, nothing but a bit of yarn on a hook. Why would these work, I wondered? I examined, at one point, a puddle on the shore. It was full of them. You can order them online or buy them at the local flyshop. I forget where that is, exactly, but somewhat near the Barnett Access. You fish them best in the backwaters, flats and somewhat close to the bank where the trout will be hunting for them. If you're fishing Barnett, aka the "Swinging Bridge" (bridge no longer exists), be sure to wade downstream, away from the crowd. FlyAndStream can tell you more, maybe, about some other spots.

Memorial Day weekend: getting off the beaten path and fishing SMB in MO with a local legend of sorts then on to the Pecos Wilderness (NM) in search of the elusive Rio Grande Cutthroat I plan to visit my son in law and pursue LMB in KS (that is NOT a destination place, but he lives there - so that makes it good) July I am camping and fishing with my wife, son in law and daughter in Durango/Carbondale CO I am dreaming about the Conejos and wondering if I can get a kitchen pass for early August.
note to self: I have got to get to Heber and fish the Little Red!
