I’m driving up to Minnesota today and will pass by the Lower Illinois River near Gore, OK. With only 2-3 hours available, what’s the best section and access point to fly fish for trout? Thanks!

Go to the Watts WMU. It’s about 1 mile off Highway 100 going east out of Gore. Look for a blue sign along the highway that marks the turnoff. There’s a nice parking lot near the river. From there walk south on the trail. There’s a small riffle about 1/4 mile down and another one just a little further downstream with nice flats above, below, and in between them. When you get to the second riffle there’s a cable across the river above it. That marks the start of the red zone.
My most productive fly by far is a chartreuse Sexy Walt’s but Zebra Midges, Pheasant Tails and other Baetis patterns such as a Higa’s SOS have been good too. If the water is still murky (from spring runoff) try a black woolly bugger. I have a thread in the Local Waters section with more details of my results this past winter and spring but that was back when the water was very clear.

Lots of stripers being caught right now also. Might not hurt to pack a heavier rod and some clouser's that might pass for a shad or small rainbow.

So, are you going to be able to check out the Driftless area at all?

I don’t know yet jonbo though I sure would like to. Skinny streams and big browns.
