Does anyone besides me use Tenkara rods to fish the river?

Been thinking of getting one for quick changes during the hatch? ? How does it work for you?

Love it! There are various lengths and strengths of rods. I use 2 the most and both are 13.5 ft. Yes they work great for quick fly changes. Works great for me on any part of the river.

Where did you buy them. How short do they collapse to. Would you consider anything shorter than 13 .5. Pros and cons of shorter vs. longer in your opinion.

2 options on purchase. Tenkarabum.com for Daiwa and TUSA.com. Collapsible length is about 2 ft. For specs go the the sites. Weight is very minimal. Have fished for 10 hours on the river with ease. I like the 13.5 length for the river since these are able to handle any size. Have caught anywhere from 3 inch to over 22 on my Daiwa 39sf and Amago. I've got some shorter ones and they are effective but have always migrated back to those 2. I usually use 14 ft of fluorocarbon line and up to 8 ft of fluorocarbon 6x tippet so I have plenty of reach. Unlike most Tenkara anglers that use a 1 fly approach, I match the hatch. I love these rods since it is very easy to change from a midge or nymph to a size 20-28 dry when you see them coming off. They are very delicate in presentation.

Man! I think I had one of those once, years ago. Bought it from an Asian guy at a swapmeet (flea market) in California. I finally broke it tinkering around with it before I got a chance to actually try it. I may have put a salmon egg on it once, I donno. I wish I still had it. jonbo

I have used my 12' Yamame and my 13 ' Ayu II Tenkara rods on the LMF. I have only fished there a few times so I am still exploring the area. Thus far my best flies have been an olive or red reverse hackle and also a Klinkhammer.

Just got back from fishing 3-11 Tenkara mostly and only fishing fun of the trip. Caught up to 12" rainbows on Tenkara flys I tie. I fish Ito and Amago from Tenkara USA. MOST FUN ON lost creek.

Just got a Tenkara rod myself (12' Sawtooth from Tenkara Rod Co) and a couple of their flies. Very anxious to try it on the spillway and in Lost Creek at the end of the month. Has anyone used a Tenkara in the Evening Hole with success?

I don't have any tenkara experience, but what are you supposed to do when you hook into one of the 5lb+ rainbows cruising around?

Casey, You let the rod do the work of fighting the fish. You may need to move around a little to assist the rod in its work but that is just to keep from finding snags and alike.

It seems like it would be awful touch and go trying to land a big fish with ~ 12' of rod and 15' of line.
Not trying to crash the thread but I honestly don't understand how this new fad can be intriguing at all. It's no different other than the fact that you are severely handicapping your abilities to fish, and fight fish. But... To each their own! A 22" landed without a reel is an impressive feat.

Since I haven't "popped off" in awhile here goes..............I agree with Brad but I will say if those using this method enjoy what they are doing, have at it. Ya all probably think my little 5' TFO 1/2wt is crazy. Well, it is! But man is it fun.

I tried one of those at the fly fish Texas expo in Athens. Reminded me of when I was a kid fishing with a cane pole.
