So I'm thinking about targeting smallmouth. I've fished largemouth most of my life in east texas lakes, but I've yet to catch a smallie.
I was wondering which is ideal for targeting smallmouth: Zone 2? Or zone 3?
I'll be wade fishing as I don't have access to a drift boat or kayak. Also: what pattern seems to work best on these smallies? I'm using an 8wt redington predator rod with an OPST skagit shooting head 325gr and lazar running line.

I don’t think you can legally float zone 2, at least that’s what I was told. Crayfish imitation patterns work well down there for catching smallies.

If you’re wanting to target bass, I’d fish above the lake or zone III from Presbyterian falls down.

Zone III will be packed with tubers and rec kayaks. Still better than the nonsense currently going on in the park. In May, we fished the Upper Mountain Fork from Smithville down about 6 miles. Caught smallies, LMB and a ton of brim. Beautiful stretch of river. Both Zone III and the UMF would be difficult to access without a kayak.

Ranger I'm assuming you put in at the bridge there in Smithville -- where did you take out if you don't mind my asking?

I couldn't find a good place to put in at the bridge. Wanted to put in at Boondockers but they were out of business. Ended up putting in just before the enterance to Boondockers at a little creek that feeds into the river, probably 1/4 mile up from the bridge. We left a vehicle under the iron bridge on Big Eagle Creek. This required us to paddle up the creek a bit, a couple of times getting out to port the kayaks up some riffles.
Not sure what the water flow is like now, but I'm game if anyone wants to try it.
