So I've been in CO since the 3rd... (wedding in Pueblo and I'm up in Denver getting a B737 type rating). After the wedding and plenty of studying, I took a trip over to Deckers. The flows are nice right now...about 350 cfs.
I was in the water at 7am and started off at the Bridge Crossing Picnic Area where I caught that nice old brown last year with my brother. I was in the mood for some swinging so a pair of soft hackles had to do. I covered the shallow/deep transition zone thoroughly and picked up a small brown and a 10" stocker rainbow. Switched to an indicator rig and tried a few combos with some weight to get down into the deep water. There just wasn't much happening for me so I packed up and headed upstream towards Deckers.
Despite being a Wednesday, there were a ton of people about--must be the last fishing push before summer's end. Pretty much 1-3 cars in every single pullover spot. I wondered if I'd find a decent place to fish with some solitude. Finally I pulled into a spot right before Deckers that only had a couple of people. One spin fisherman was just finishing up so I hopped into his spot. I switched to Tungsten Surveyor and a size 20 Jujubee Midge. Picked up 3 nice fish in about a half hour. A 15" brown, another 14" brown, and a nice 14" cutbow. This was turning out to be a great day.
I moved upstream into Deckers just upstream of the bridge. A few anglers were calling it quits or taking breaks so I moved in and fished the water they were in. I caught two rainbows in this area, one on the same Jujubee and the other on a size 18 BWO parachute. Despite a nice size, the first one didn't fight much and the poor fish's face was really messed up. The latter I couldn't tell if the fish took my dry or a natural so I set the hook. I wound up hooking it in the tail and it took a while to get it to the net.
After that things slowed down and I called it quits about 1230. I can't complain......pictures to follow.
I might make it over for round two tomorrow....
