I’ve finally decided to implement a “working” box into my gear at the advice of George Daniel’s books. The basic idea is to choose some fly patterns (confidence flies, or what you expect to hatch or stages of a hatch) to avoid the “random” choice of picking a fly. Hopefully it will be a more organized and faster way to swap out flies without pulling the whole box out. I’ve suspended a C&F Design CFA-50 between the shoulder straps of my chest pack. It’s got magnets and slit foam and is open on the sides to allow flies to dry. Attachments:

Oh yeah and it comes with a fly threader, which I've never used before, but it might come in handy with small patterns. Two are cued up and ready to go...

Those dime size earth magnets work so well with hooks and flies. I use one to coax midge hooks out of the pack. Nice set-up.

Darrell, According to C&F, it can go as low as size 20-26 and 7-8X tippet sizes... I've got pretty good dexterity even with small flies, but maybe this will be handy on cold, wet days... or when the temp is below freezing and you're getting "the hypothermia" in your fingers...

Not sure what the limitations or specifications are for a “”working” box but when your on the road for three months, size does matter....... portability may be one of the not mentioned requirements. I noticed mirv doesn’t have any “backup wipes” in his working box. But I don't have a threader in this box. Which is more important ??
