Anyone ever fished the Pecos River north of Pecos, NM? I'll be fishing there likely the morning of the 17th. I've found some information online, but it never hurts to ask here.
The current report from High Desert Angler sounds promising:
I don't know if I'll be able to get as far north as Terrero, but we'll see...

If at all possible, you do want to try to go north of Terrero. It's not that far from Pecos to Terrero. I lived in Albuquerque for a few years and frequently fished the area above Terrero. The areas down stream always seemed crowded to me, although you could probably walk/wade up or down from a parking area and find some solitude. It's beautiful country well worth your time to visit, even if you can't make it above Terrero.

Thanks Danny. The Windsor Creek area north of Terrero looks pretty nice. I'll probably stick to the river area around Monastery Lake--just to keep the drive around 30mins from Santa Fe and ensure I still get cell reception (hopefully). I got in a little trouble during my LMF trip--the AT&T coverage is atrocious around Broken Bow. Happy wives = happier anglers!
I did find a nice cabin with reasonable rates just south of Terrero for this fall.....

Pecos River (side) trip success.
My wife and I fished just south of Terrero. Fishing was great for the short time we were there. Hooked four and landed two--14" rainbow & an 8-9" brown.
A couple of mistakes we made:
1) We should have ditched fishing Monastery Lake altogether. Too crowded and really a pretty trashy lake. I wasn't expecting miracles, but wasp nests in the crappy toilet facility sealed the deal for me to skip this place next time. No river access from that lake area that I saw (it looked like there was on Google Earth). From a distance, it looked like it was all fenced off with signs.
2) Post trip I googled a few more places just north of where we were that looked pretty sweet. Taking the extra time to hit a few more spots would have been even better. We simply ran out of time for a day trip.
No picture of the rainbow, but here's a few photos. Both fish were fooled with Mercer's Micro Stone size 14.

Glad you had success. I did not know you were thinking of Monastery Lake--likely would have recommended against it. It's more of a bait (Salmon Egg) lake, IMO. Good to know the area below Terrero is still pretty nice.

Yeah, at first I was thinking of just shortening my drive...and the river around the lake looked descent. Trails on Google made it appear that there was river access as well. I don't mind the challenge of lake fly fishing, but when a bunch of young guys right next to you seem to have found the honey hole spot on the lake (and using bait), you're pretty much done for. They were reeling them in left and right, with at least two fish 18" or greater. Frustrating. I'll take a smaller river rainbow any day though--they are much stronger.

Amen to that! Also, once you get north of Terrero, you are more likely to get into some wild fish, or at least fish that have been in the river for quite some time. There used to be some very nice browns up there. Fish the rock ledges and the currents against them--and there should still be some nice cut bank areas.
