I picked up a 7’ - 4wt White River (BPS) rod at a garage sale. I told myself I needed it for small streams and pond hopping. Could also be a starter rod for grandson. Any suggestions as to a lightweight reel for it? Everything I have makes the rod butt heavy.

Take it to your local BPS and try different reels on it.

I have a Lamson Remix 1.5 on my Syndicate 10-ft 3-wt rod. It’s mostly aluminum and seems like a very lightweight reel to me.
You might try calling around to fly shops and ask for their recommendations on your application. I’m know a lot of them have good return policies if you don’t end up liking what they recommend.

The Orvis Battenkill for 3-5 wt. line is really light and solidly built.
