Who all has fished this area? Thinking about another trip cousins trip this summer. Wife is not too fond of the ideal of staying at a B&B in Amalia but the Rio Castiilla runs through it.

I have been there. Beautiful area. Great place to fish. Lots of Rios on dries. Nothing big for me. I did not go far enough up the stream both times I went. As Dain says about such situations, I had concrete boots. I would recommend you drive further up toward the reservoir and fish. These fish to get fished to a lot and they strike very quickly! Gotta be fast. Humpies, Wulffs, Adamses, then hoppers if you go later in the season. It’s an extremely lush valley (caldera?) with the state’s largest elk herd. Surrounded by mountains. Great place to be. It’s a haul from any gas stations/food in Amalia/Costilla, so be prepared.

Wow! After reading your blog, I feel as if I have been there now myself! Excellent write-up, and I love the photos!
What rod is that? Love me some Tonkin Cane fly rods!

JR,
I'm glad you enjoyed the old trip report. The rod in the pictures with the Rio Grande Cuts is an 8.5', 3-piece Heddon #14 that was made between 1950-52. If you read to the end, the rod pictured with the Brown from the Conejos River is an 8', 2-piece Orvis Battenkill from 1963.
