The Orvis 10ft 3wt is home paired with a LA clear water II reel. Can’t wait for the second week of May. A big thank you to my son on the early Father’s Day present. Let the euro nymphing begin!

Is it the new Clearwater series? It takes a little getting used to but it’s a great tool to use. I really like it and it’s the way I fish about 90% of the time now

From the reviews I have read it’s hard to beat the price point they have it set at. Now the learning begins. How does a basic roll cast work with it? That’s the cast Trey taught us when nymphing, so I figured that’s where I’ll start.

Water load is nice but doesn’t happen all the time fishing this style. Watch the video Modern Nymphing if you can

When euro nymphing is it common not to have the line out past then of the rod? Is it ok just to have the leader and tippit out past the end of the rod? From watching the video that was the impression I got.

If you have standard WF line on the reel, you basically don't even want that line to reach your guides. It causes trouble by sagging between the guides. Instead, you want the last bit of leader to be on the reel, and everything out past that to be leader. The thing to do, if you're new (and I still do, I'm pretty new) is to go to Tactical Flyfisher.com. Order their euro-nymphing leader. It's about 30 feet long. You can get a "Thin" and a "Thinner" and see which suits you best. I run WF line on my Echo because when I'm through with euro-nymphing I can swap to a regular old tapered leader to dry-fly and wet-fly fish, and bobber-nymph. My Echo does that pretty well. I don't know about the other euro-rods.
Now, others run specialty euro-nymphing line on their euro-rods. I get the idea that with that stuff you can let it come out through the guides. I also think they use shorter leaders then. Bill can tell you more, I'm sure. I think some of the better casters can cast a dry okay with that set-up. I'm askeert to try.
Now, I'm basically a crummy caster. I got one lesson 5 or 6 years ago, don't ever practice or get coached. For me, casting euro-style is like flopping a cat toy around. It really bugged me at first. I think I'm getting better at it though. I think other guys do a lot better and can tell you more.
Also, from Tactical Fly Fisher, you can buy their 2 instructional CD's. They're both really good. You can start with the first. I have them on my Vimeo account. (They're not paying me or anything, LOL).

From watching the video that was the impression I got. I think flyandstream uses Euro fly line and a very light leader. I personally use a all mono rig unless it’s raining. My suggestion to you is just use a very long leader on your regular fly line since you are just starting out and go from there.

Texastroutfisher the two most commonly used casts when fishing european long-leader methods are the water load cast and the tuck / lob cast. Keep in mind, though, that casts are short and controlled, usually you're only casting up to the length of the rod away from you, positioning your body rather than making long presentations.

Thanks for all the input everyone, I appreciate it. Sorry for all the questions but my son and I are learning all this on the “ fly “. The videos and articles only go so far. This site has been a absolute gold mine for us and we appreciate everyone’s willingness to help. See y’all on the water and I’m sure I will be back with more questions.

Bill, you've mentioned the rain a couple of times. I'm curious, what is it with rain that makes you prefer a fly line over a long euro leader?

When it’s raining/drizzling the mono will stick to the rod. When this happens you cannot let any line out other than pulling by hand. Some people actually wrap their rods with mono to keep this from happening. I personally will just use a shorter leader with the Euro fly line.

Hey TD, that Euro fly line, can you cast traditionally with it, at all. I mean, can you fish dries, soft hackles, indicator nymph very well? I run WF line on my reel so I can easily swap to those methods. I don't know if I just assumed that the Euro line wouldn't cast very well for traditional fly fishing, or read that.

In the normal sense I am going to say no. It is to light. The size is .60 mm on my airflo Euro line about the same size as 30lb test mono

Well, my lady friend surprised me with an Orvis Recon 3wt for my birthday, so I guess I'll be out there next week trying to learn the technique. Still trying to figure out how she knew I wanted one!

Pretty sure she went to Orvis. One of the guys that works at the Dallas store and I have gotten pretty friendly, and she met him on an earlier trip. So I think she went there and asked.
Special lady.

And it’s time for another question. When you add your tippit do you run one size, say 4x or do you stack it, say 4x down to 5x? Thanks in advance!!

Most of the time one size. Trout hunter 5.5 X is my favorite I might try Hanak before long for the price
