Thinking about packing up the hammock and rods and driving up to NM the first week of Ssptember for a couple days.
I am looking at the upper Pecos region near Terrero NM. Anyone have any experience with fishing the streams there? Any idea how the fiahing will be in September. I appreciate any info ya got....thx

Might be better this year since there was good snowpack. Lat year was awful. I know they are thinking Costilla, Chama, and Los Pinos will be good well into the fall.

Yeah, my initial concern was water levels, but that seems like it might not be a problem this year, so I figured I might risk it. If its not good, it's not hard to pack up and drive a little to Chama, etc.

Went there to fish and backpack back in Fall 2015, first week of October. We spent one night at the Cowles Campground and fished the pecos river in that area for one day. Then we backpacked in the pecos wilderness for 4 days of hiking with some fishing at higher elevation in the streams in the area. When we were there, the aspen trees were in fall colors and the scenery up in the wilderness area was amazing. We caught a mix of stocked rainbows and wild browns in the pecos near Cowles/Tererro. A hopper dropper rig with one or two nymphs seemed to work very well everywhere we fished. The pecos along NW-63 was great for building confidence and catching willing stocked fish, but the best fishing that we experienced required some hiking. Which makes sense: hike-only access means less pressured fish. We hiked and camped along loops 1 and 2 on this map over 4 days with great fishing along the way, especially in the meadows of the upper pecos river. Temps at night were really cold up in the wilderness area and mats + -15 F rated down sleeping bags were no luxury. But that was first week of October and at higher elevation compared to Cowles/Terrero. First week of September might be great for hammock camping.

It should be better based on what we encountered when we were both out there in early July. BTW, I went to your campsite and apparently missed you by less than an hour - at least according to the militia you were camped next to up in Valle Vidal.

Sorry Brad! I had to get out of there. Dusty, nasty, crowded, and not a shred of cell service anywhere. Not a good experience.

Thanks. That brown was fun. He jumped twice. He had some spunk.

I'm lazy - I will just piggy back on this thread. New Mexico was OK this summer. I think it will be good into the fall as well. I fished the Valle Vidal in Carson NF - camped at Cimarron CG at 9500' elevation. A lot of water, lots of cigars, a lot of small fish. Waaaayyy too many people. Camping was fun, Magick had a great time wandering around, and met some good people. Fishing as ok I guess. Just too crowded. I did manage to hook into a few good fish on the Costilla, but some of the tributaries were barren. I had high hopes . I do want to try again on a non-holiday weekend. Forum again says it has reached capacity on space, so no pics.

Yeah, the espresso rig is a new addition to my arsenal and it worked very well. It is a Minipresso NS. I used to use an aeropress, but you need ground coffee, to make the coffee. This version of the minipresso uses nespresso modules which are easy to carry and it makes a good espresso or add hot water to the espresso for an americano. Not heavy, and easy to use.

I’m curious about that espresso rig you’ve got too. I too have an Aero Press which makes a mean cup of coffee, but that’s more for camp life. I recently bought a Yeti 12 oz Hot Shot. I feel that with coffee before I leave the house and it fits in my William Joseph pack. Hours later there’s hot coffee waiting for me.
Anyway, is it worth the investment??

Yes, I think it was worth the investment. It's easy to use and it works pretty darn good. I was very pleased with the result. Its compact, and works well. You may have to experiment with different nespresso pods (if you go with that version) to find the one you like best. youtu.be/OltZyMWhKm0
