Just checking to see if there’s a recent report. I’ll be there with 4 and 6 year old but hope to break away with the fly early and just prior to sundown. Is there anywhere I can take the kiddos to catch a couple of ‘easy ones’?

Johnfish1111 - The last time I fished there, I fished all day but with limited success and it was getting on to the early-evening hours and I found myself back at the bluffs and Evening hole. I saw a gentleman arrive there who brought a pinning rod. He was fishing in the same area in the real slow moving water and catching quite a few trout. He did let them all go, but I was amazed by how many and how quickly he was getting hits. Naturally, seeing this phenomena, I walked over to him to see what he was using (because I wasn't doing much with nymphs or dries at the time and was just curious because he was hauling one in after the other). He was using Rapala countdown minnows that looked like trout and had a small weight about a foot ahead of the fish to help get it down.
I'll never forget his comment...he said "I normally come here to fly fish, but sometimes you just really want to catch a bunch of fish in a short amount of time!" Just the simplicity of the statement got me. He's right! He showed up about an hour or two before dark...could have been after a day with the family and he had a limited time to fish. I didn't ask. But at least it's one more thing to keep in mind when thinking about "easy ones" for the kids. So with that under your hat, I would bet the river is full of fish that your kiddos can try and get with their spinning or spin cast rig and a Rrapala or Mepps/Fox spinner. However, when you mentioned 4 and 6 year olds, I remember my two at that age and its a lot like herding cats...their attention drifts pretty quickly if they aren't catching fish or there is a good stream of questions coming out of them about what you're doing. It's all good, just that I noted that whenever I took kids that young fishing, it quickly became obvious I wasn't going to be fishing. You are going to be busy.
I hope you have good luck and enjoy the time with your kiddos!

There is that island across from the swim beach, that is accessible for the kids. And it can hold trout, the spot can be a bit more forgiving fishing with young kids. Having a decent bank for sitting and not too much overhanging limbs / trees. You can walk out to it by the swim beach and fish not the swim beach side of the island but the on river, across from the miniature golf course. That would be one good spot worth exploring. That said, I took my nephews to that spot a couple of weeks ago that seemed to workout well enough. They got a couple bluegill out of it, not what I was hoping for but they were pleased just to be catching.

We ended up fishing the bridges after the park stocked the trout. We caught a whole bunch and the kids loved it. They really enjoyed seeing the trout get put in as well. How often does the park do that?

They stock (generally) every other week? I was always under the impression it was once every 3 or 4 months.

every other week, mostly unannounced. Just try not to be one of THOSE guys that follow the stocking truck around.

That's news to me. A buddy and I were there a day after they were stocked and we felt like we won the lottery. Making a trip up there tomorrow. Hopefully I'll see some action!

Is the lake still "turning over" or something?
