My girlfriend and I will be down there in a couple of weeks and wanted to try to catch a few rainbows during our stay at a local cabin resort. How is the fishing this time of year? Would we have any luck with a light Zebco, some power bait, small hook, and a split shot weight? We don’t want to do anything extravagant like fly fishing or hire a guide. We just want to try our luck in waders and try to catch a few. And a popular spot for easy bank fishing or wading? Thanks, Chris

Well, this is a fly shop forum, but I am going to go with the idea that you are sincere in asking for advice. The fishing should be just fine in the next few weeks. Weather temps are dropping which helps the water temps and the trout should respond favorably. People use the exact setup you mentioned on the Lower Mountain Fork. I would think you would have a decent shot at catching a few fish with some patience and a keen eye for likely spots fish tend to hold in rivers. Almost all of the river is accessible for bank fishing, although you do need to read the local regulations in place for the LMF. You need to familiarize yourself with them and follow them. As well, show courtesy to other people fishing and give them space. Some of the more popular spots on the river for traditional fishing are the top of the Spillway and down along what is known as Cold Hole. If you go into the fly shop and visit with Coach Eddie, he can show you these spots on a map and give you advice. Although fly fishing might look extravagant, I would encourage you to give the fly shop a try for a guided trip. The guides there can teach you more about the river and the fish in 4 hours than you'll learn on your own over a much longer time. Plus, fly fishing is a beautiful way to experience the thrill of catching a fish and being truly connected to the water. Have fun, be safe, and make friends the right way;)

Thanks, Chris One regulation you need to know about is that any hook in the water is required to be barbless. It is OK to mash the barb down flat. Like Sulross said, you would be surprised how much fun you’d have with a guided trip set up by the fly shop. Plus, the guide will know the rules & regs on the river. Most of all, HAVE FUN and enjoy the scenery! JR
