I should probably head up Sunday to knock some dust off before Colorado. Haven’t really fished for a few months, other than stopping in for a few casts.

Yeah, I'll come find you on Spillway if I end up making it up. Either way, we always like seeing your reports here!

Darrell, My wife and I will be in Rapid City in September. It's not a fishing trip but I'm always prepared to fish. I was going to stop by Dakota Angler and Outfitters for info on public access for a 1/2 day outing. Do you know any good spots? There are lots of good spots out there! And September seems like a good month to go (cooler temperatures, sightseeing crowds thinning out). I encourage you to hire a guide at Dakota Angler, even for half a day. I did that the first time out there and he was extremely helpful. Barring that … The inlets of Pactola Reservoir hold some very big rainbows. My daughter caught a 24-incher - her first trout ever! From there, go up above the reservoir and fish Rapid Creek starting at Silver City. Nice rainbows and browns up there and it’s a great section for Euro Nymphing if that’s your style. Rapid Creek also flows out of the reservoir and down through Rapid City but I have not fished that section … yet. Castle Creek has also been good for rainbows, browns, and brooks although it’s a small creek so the fish are smaller. It’s nice though because it’s fed by a controlled outlet out of Deerfield Lake so the flow is usually just right. It’s also nice because it’s a winding stream through a grassy meadow with very few trees along it. Spearfish Creek is a nice one too. We’ve caught both browns and rainbows there. The creek flows through one of the most spectacular scenic canyons you’ll ever see. The drive through on highway 14A alone is worth it. I’ve mainly fished from Cheyenne Crossing down to Savoy but you can fish higher up and all the way down through Spearfish. We’ve had some great dry fly action below Savoy at a place called The Devil’s Bathtub. If you browse the Dakota Angler website you will find their fishing reports which are usually very good. They put up a new one about every two weeks so the information is usually up-to-date. I’ve written about my trips to the Black Hills here!We got back from Rapid City on Saturday. The weather was HOT! Didn't even try to fish. Saw only one fly fisherman in Spear Creek Canyon and he wasn't having any luck. Beautiful country though.

They have had some hot weather out there. My son and I hit a relatively cool weekend in the middle of August and did fairly well. We caught some nice Brooks and Browns in Upper Rapid Creek and Castle Creek - both Upper and Lower. I guess the lower part is in a place called Kinney Canyon. The first fish I caught for the weekend was a fairly nice rainbow and that was the last one I saw. All the fish were definitely down at the bottom of the deep pools. Didn't find anything in the riffles.
<We still can't post pics? Yikes.>
We are hoping to get back toward the end of this month. It should be cooler by then and if so, the fish should be much more accessible.

Lack of activity titled thread? Looks like I need to post here. I'm usually on here from now until spring break, then no mas Ok fly fishing for me. I usually take my talents (or lack there of) to NM or Co to fish the rest of the year. Too crowded even before the covid camping influx. Anyway, I'm really only here now to keep checking for the stop log report!! Tight lines...

I was finally able to fish for the LMF for the 1st time in 3 years this past Friday. Due to health issues--hip surgery, back surgery, knee surgery, neuropathy that causes numbness in my legs, and a cancer diagnosis--I've been unable to get around well enough to fish. The thing I've missed most during all this was, by far, fly fishing. But a couple of friends baby-sat me from the parking lot to the Bluffs until I was able to get some sense of my footing so I was able to fish for about an hour or so.
We stopped by the fly shop to see what was working and picked up a half-dozen flies--Wooly buggers, RS2's, and black Copper Johns. Problem was, standing by his pickup rigging up, my hands were shaking so badly with anticipation and excitement at finally being on the river, I immediately dropped two of them and we couldn't find them. We got there Friday around 11 and pretty much had our choice of spots--either because it was approaching lunch hour or the crowds hadn't made it up yet. I got into a couple of fish right off the bat but, alas, I'd forgotten to buy new tippet and they broke off right when I got them to shore. But just being out in the beauty of place was so amazing. There was a Black Caddis hatch going on in the pool in front of the Bluffs--looked to be a size 20-24.
But the changes to the area all the way from Broken Bow to Hochatown and the surrounding areas was nothing short of amazing. By the time we headed back to town, around 2ish, the traffic heading towards the river was literally bumper to bumper. New construction is going on in every nook and cranny in the mountains--much of which appeared to be inaccessible if a little ice/snow or a heavy rain came through.
At any rate, the weather was beautiful. We had our choice of spots. Folks were friendly and many, seeing me struggle a bit with getting around, were kind and helpful and offered flies. And just the fact of knowing I can fish again has kept me floating on a cloud ever since. I'll head back up sooner rather than later, get me a guide, and fish again.
You'll recognize me--if not for my unsteady gait, then for the ear to ear smile on my face.

Discussion boards, in general, have been slowing down for years due to the demon Facebook. And all I hear here in North Central Texas is, "Broken Bow isn't worth it anymore," and they go on to cite a litany of grievances, and differences from the "good old days." In fact the complaints coming to me have gotten so bad, I really need to see it for myself. I invite anyone to invite me up, and prove all these complaints to be all wrong.

You should come over Dec 10-12 for Trout Camp! We have 2 campsites reserved at Elm. Should be a great opportunity to re-connect with the river and hear from other anglers about how the fishing has been lately. For my part, my first visit to the LMFR was sometime in 2013. I’ve definitely seen some changes since then, but nothing that has steered me away from coming back as much as I can!

This is a kind invitation! I appreciate it. If I can sneak away, I certainly will. I would like nothing better than to have someone show me the "new" ropes there. So how crowded is it in the cold months, like this one? Crowds or no crowds, I will be there if I can get away.
