I've fished several times this season without making reports here. Reason is, when I don't do particularly well, I tend to not report. I just want to forget the day, I guess, or maybe there's just nothing to tell that might help anyone. I could say, "There weren't any fish", or "They weren't biting", but I know better than that. Suffice to say, fish-catching wise, it's been a particularly unproductive year for me.
Anyhow, even though I had a mediocre day again fishing last Wednesday, I'm reporting on it. I started at Lower Spillway. Up a little ways from the main access I found a pretty big eddy off of a plunge-pocket or small waterfall that had fish rising in it. Every 1/2 minute or so, another riser. I started dropping emergers in there trying to tempt the riser(s). Over the course of probably close to an hour I must have tried half of the soft-hackles in my case. They ignored them all. I really had thought they'd take a caddis as there were a lot of black caddises along the shore-line and a few tan caddises. I guess mine didn't look just right. I finally gave up there I went upstream to a fairly long flat that's mostly against the far bank. Some might know where I mean. It's a little bit hard to reach, but then a lot of SC is. Again, I tried a lot of stuff, emergers, nymphs, wooly buggers, all for naught. I don't know what it is, but I just can't get Spillway, especially Lower Spillway, sussed out. It seems I try everything, but to no avail, or not much.
So, I then tried my luck at the Evening Hole. I kept trying with the emergers as there were a lot of bugs in the air, caddis it looked like, and sulphurs. Well, they didn't want the caddis emergers or my sulphur imitations. Maybe my sulphur imitations were too bright yellow, I don't know. Finally, I tied on a soft hackle gold-ribbed hare's ear I bought at the fly shop. Bingo! This they liked. I caught 4 or 5 small stocked rainbows in a row until that stopped working. I don't know what that bug represents, but the fish like it better than they do a lot of other things I've tried. After that I tried a lot of stuff, mainly euro-nymph style around the Rockpile Run. No action, for me.
Welp! There's my somewhat pitiful report about the fishing. Other than that, it was another great day being on the river.
