I think I read a couple of guys here also fished the Blue River. Anyone else apart of the Blue River Fly fishers group? Unfortunately, I will be missing the annual get together 1 Nov, but will be there 3-4 Nov.

JP, If you're talking about the Blue River in OK (near Tishomingo), I fish there during the "winter" (Nov - Mar) trout season. I avoid the opening day/weekend and both the "fishing derby events" (Veteran's Day and President's Day). It is often crowded, especially in the campground area. People catch their limit, go to their RV to deposit the fish, and then return to catch and keep even more fish! I like the catch and release (delayed harvest) section on the upper end. The number of people fishing there is far less, probably a direct result of the 30-minute walk from the parking lot on Hwy 7. Starting 1 Mar, you can keep the fish in this section because they will not survive the high water temperature (well in the mid 80s) of summer in OK. I believe the group you mentioned hosts a "one fly event" each year and a cookout; here is a web site for a group on the Blue River: http: //groups.yahoo.com/group/blueriverflyfishers/ There is also a Blue River in CO. I think some of the people on this board, especially those who spend their summer in the mountains, may fish there. I haven't been there, but it's on my list of places to fish. Thanks- Ken

Ken,
Yep, I was referring to the Blue River in OK. I'm a member of the yahoo group. I have not fished the catch and release area of the Blue yet but I hear the fish get to a decent size in that area as the season progresses. I know wherever there is a barrel on the bank is a stocking point. Do they drive way back into the C&R and stock up there as well, or do fish just move upstream to that area? I've fished the wilderness area a couple of times...I have yet to go south of the handicap area where the majority of bait anglers throw their rigs from the banks (near the campground). I will probably work my way upstream, but if you think heading direct to the C&R would be worth it (Monday, immediately after opening weekend), I would consider that.

J.P.
I fish the Blue River WMA area myself in the winter. As Ken suggested, the C & R area is less crowded as it is hike to the area from Hwy 7 along with the no harvest designation. I park in the corral which is the most western lot on on the north side of hwy 7 and the closest to the C & R. I actually bike in to cut down on the time to the river. I'm heading up there tomorrow to fish the C & R at least the in the morning as I'm considering visiting with the Blue River Fly Fishing group @ the campground for lunch.

Troy,
Sounds good. I'll miss the get together, but I'll be heading to the C&R on Monday.

How has the fishing been so far? I've never fished the Blue, but want to give it a go in the next few weeks.

Suloss,
It was excellent. I'm still working on my fishing report from Monday. There are some big fish in the C&R area. I didn't see a single person all day.

Sulross, Heading up there on Tuesday as I fished last year on Veteran's Day and only saw one other fisherman in the C & R. Fished the C & R last Saturday and the fishing was great. As J.P. said, there are some big fish in the C & R. My lack of patience on Saturday resulted in breaking off two fish that most likely could have been my all time best. Also read the fish are bigger this year in the "catch and kill" area near the campground. The Blue is not a very technical fishery given the weekly stocking. It's my understanding that the C & R is not stocked as frequently though. However, in the C & R as the season progresses and the fish acclimate and become weary of Woolly Buggers, it can be more of a challenge. Regardless of the fishing, the Blue WMA is a very unique and beautiful place. I highly recommend a visit. Also, there's a one fly tourney in February that's a great event and raises money for the fishery.

These reports make it tough to have to coach and teach tomorrow! Not to mention, my team has a tournament on Saturday. Thanks for the feedback; I can't wait to give it a go up there. I will most likely take an overnight'er and camp. Hope to see one of you up there, but hope the rest of the water is wide open:)
