This beast had me going on a 47 minute adventure. Three times I had less than 1/3rd of my backing left. A disabled vet was with me the entire time and actually grabbed the fish so we could get a quick photo. Even after all the excitement this fish threw water everywhere when we released it. I was fishing for bass and crappie using a size 10 black Byrd's Gilbuster.

Ward I still have a hard time thinking about that huge catfish you took several years ago. I have 3 big cats on a 2 and 4 wt fly rod but nothing as huge as that monster you landed. That photo would bear re-posting.

I can imagine your arms would be burning after that fight. Nice fish Al!

No kidding Aaron! Several times I switched the rod to my left hand and shook out my right arm as it began to cramp. I've gotten pretty good with this "made-up" technique. If I could have ended this ordeal sooner I would have.

That's cool, I have not gotten a carp on a fly yet, but plan to put this on my to do list this year. Did you sight cast to him? Any suggestions on fly fishing for carp?

Hoss,
Normally I target the basic species in these local ponds. It so happens this beast was up in shallower water and I tossed a very small olive near deere in it's direction with enough of a lead that apparently I did not spook the fish. Good fortune not so much skill hooking this fish. No doubt there are those on this board with much more skill than I when it comes to carp or trout.

Slim, I had a beautiful specimen of a Koi hooked last year at a local neighborhood pond. Bright orange, black and white coloration. The small hook pulled out after about 20 seconds. The fish was over 10 lbs.
