I'm thinking of tying up some caddis. I prefer to fish wet flies/soft hackles/emergers, swung. I don't fish dry flies that much, because, with the tiny pattern flies that usually seem most effective like Griffith's gnats, I can't even see them out there and I strain and strain. So I have an aversion. I know, you're supposed to strike on any rise in the area of where you think your Gg is, but it tends to irritate me. So if I'm in a hatch I will most often try to swing a soft hackle of some type in the film and wait for the line to tighten. I have enjoyed sight fishing with a little larger pattern, say, Light Cahill's at Evening Hole, or elkhair caddises in the second shoal in Zone 2 in a hatch (Oh, that was awesome!) , but I'm getting off topic.
Can someone tell me what size of caddis pupa/emerger they find most effective at BB, and what color? It seems to me most patterns either feature yellow/cream or chartreuse/olive. I tied some sparkle pupa with a lot of black in a 16 because people were mentioning "black caddises". Once or twice those have worked out pretty well. Is 16 usually the right size for caddis at BB? Green, yellow, both? Thanks, fellas. jonbo
PS Check this beauty out. I'm thinking of trying it. thefeatherbender.com/2013/05/28/uv-caddis-pupa/

I like 16s and 18s hard to beat the softhackle caddis pupa LaFontaine’s sparkle emerger has been really productive too - here's a video if you want to tie it up

I have tied some sparkle emergers with quite a bit of black in them and used them at Beaver's Bend. They've worked pretty well. I tied also some more yellowish like in the video which haven't worked for me yet. My trouble now is I don't know exactly how I tied the ones with the black. I have the bad habit, I guess, of grabbing whatever material looks good to me and tieing some flies. Then I forget what I did and don't write it down. So then if it works, to tie more, I have to reverse-engineer my own stuff!
That first emerger looks great! I'm going to try to reverse-engineer it. Looks like a hare's ear dubbing loop, copper wire, and partridge feather ought to about do it. I usually tie several flies with a bead head and several without so I have options when I fish. Thanks!

LMF is all black and green for caddis from what I have seen. But the stockers will still eat anything presented to them

I'm finding that when they're rising they'll hit about anything I throw in a 20-22. Maybe it's because little BWO's are coming off, or maybe it's just because, as you say Jeff, the planters will bite most anything. Anywho, I've been using this, called a Pueblo emerger, because it's really simple to tie. www.youtube.com/watch?v=VgqyBYr3S1o(Sorry, everyone for not starting this thread in the fly-tying forum. I didn't know what direction it would go... or something.)
