Took a trip to the Baron Fork this weekend and caught my best smallmouth on a fly rod to date. Still not the 18-20 inch once in a lifetime monster that I'm after, but still a nice fish and lots of fun on the fly. This one took an autumn bugger, which for whatever reason is my number one fly for smalljaws .

nice fish, great catch. Living in north texas, I need to learn how to fish for bass (large and small) with some success. The 4-5 trout trips a year are not enough to scratch the itch. Do you generally throw a big bugger (or streamer) for smallmouth? Size 2ish or something smaller?

When they're biting they'll hit just about anything. I've caught them on articulated stuff even. My best luck has usually been with about a size 6. Summer is usually the best time. Once we get through this all this rain that's forecasted and the rivers get back to normal, the bite should be on. It was still a little slow this weekend.

Go to the Fly Tying subject on the board home page and there are a few recent wooley buggers pictures.
