I've seen a few threads about the Cimarron River and of course the San Juan looms large in New Mexico, but has anyone ever fished Valle Vidal? I can't find very much information on it.

Look here for an old post on another forum about my trip in 2010. The 1st couple of days we fished the Valle Vidal and then went north to fish the Conejos River in southern CO: classicflyrodforum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=71&t=39043&hilit=northern+new+mexico+and+southern+coloradoObviously, this is a bit dated; however, it will provide some big picture info on the Rio Costillo. If you're still interested after reading my report, check out Flyfisher's Guide to New Mexico by Van Beacham or contact 1 of the fly shops in Taos for some current info. Thanks- Ken

I have fished here twice. Great to catch truly native, wild trout (not instigating the debate ). The fish are small and very fast. Rio Grande cutts. Dry flies. Some other trout species in the mix. It's a beautiful, unspoiled place in the Valle Vidal. If you go, go further upstream.. I always get sucked in to the first few good looking spots. I call those spots the "sucker holes." Everybody stops to fish them instead of venturing on another few miles. Anyway, I'd also like to fish the Latir Lakes in Rio Costilla park. Haven't ventured that far into the park yet. Also, do yourself a favor and fish the Rio Grande. Takes some physical exertion getting down into the gorge, but it is worth it.
