For several years pretty much all I fished was Spillway creek to Evening hole bridge so I'm trying to learn some of these new to me spots. I think I have 40' hole [slow water area past the bend of Hickory hole] and Hickory hole figured out but for some reason I was thinking the Day use area was the start of zone 2 because of the day parking at the gate. Any help on where it is would be appreciated.
Should be fun tomorrow, kind of like the blind leading the blind. Both of the guys I'm taking have never been on the LMF and one has only used a fly rod once when I took them to the Blue. I think I have enough Olive Near Deer's tied so I'm going to try to tie some size 20 WD40 type of flies in Olive. Notice I said "try" because this might be pretty comical.

Bill, last week I got into a pretty significant BWO hatch at Hickory. I picked up a couple off of the surface. They were about a 22 size. They indeed had bluish wings and kind of an olive body. The body was really skinny. The tails were tan and the head brown. I tried a Parachute Adams I'd tied in a 22 to no avail. It was pretty funny looking though, so I don't really blame them. I tried several emergers with a little luck, but not much. I finally tied on a wee emerger I'd tied in a 22, and they liked it. So, I recommend you tie those WD 40's as small as you can. Break 'em out if it's the afternoon and you start seeing rises. With them little bitty patterns I leave out parts like the wing case if it starts getting crowded on the hook. Hmm, an RS2 in an olive might be the ticket there.
I'm guessing the "Day Use Area" is at the bridge with the swimming area on one side and the section of river going down toward where the Powerhouse water tiesin on the other side. The Day Use Area would be the swimming area side. Right now that area has riffles in it a little upstream. I see guys fishing there. I never seem to get around to trying it, though. That's my guess. I could be wrong.
Also, the hatch was going on in a steady rain. It didn't bother me with my waders on, a good hat and semi-waterproof jacket. If thunder and lightning started I would have been out of there, but it didn't.

There are actually a couple day use areas in the park. The beginning of zone II is a day use area. The area Jonbo is referring to may or may not be a day use area I don't know. I've always just heard that referred to as the swim beach.
Usually when people talk about the "day use area" as they are referring to either the area between hickory and the 40 foot hole, on the opposite bank, or another area that's just up from the fly shop bridge that can be reached from the campground loop. The first spot you get to by going across the evening hole bridge (coming from the fly shop side) and taking a left onto a gravel road that spits you out just above 40 foot hole.

Turfdawg,
Was nice meeting you and the two guys you have in "training" to be Fly Casters. Don't go to hard on them they make the same mistakes all newbies do. Thanks for the information for the shortcut to the upper spillway. LOL Hope to see ya'll again on the LMFR

Thanks David, it was nice meeting you also. The other two guys had fun even if they didn't catch many. We went back to where we met you and we all caught some out of there before we left so that was nice. Hope to see you again.
Nice sunglasses you were wearing. Good taste lol
