Well, I read on the Foundation Board that Evening Hole is going to be redone starting on February 6.... and I am planning on getting up there for a week on the 5th.... That begs the question, how far downstream will the water be muddy? I know above EH we'll be OK. Will Z2 be clear? We're planning on visiting Rereg for the first time... advisable? Hoping someone with experience will chime in with some advise... Thanks in advance.

Hey Jack! I fished maybe 50-60 yards downstream from the last construction by the bluffs and I think the fishing was even better. You will have to change to attractor patterns. The water would also clear up in 5 minutes or so which surprised me. I am assuming it would be the same further downstream but I could be wrong. Hope this helps!

FWIW about the upcoming Evening Hole work schrederman mentions which we've all been anticipating: lmfrfoundation.org/latest-news-and-updatesLooking forward to the restoration! I s'pose the spawning beds are done with and the little ones will move outta the way of the Tonka Toys in the water? Wouldn't want them dredged up or bulldozed into oblivion. I suppose that's all been taken in to account. The fix-it will be an interesting thing to see.

Thanks, Grant, as always, for putting up the link.
-And man, that'll be great, won't it? I can't believe the Evening Hole is about to be restored to its old glory. I can't wait till this time next year.

They are hoping to have it done by Spring Break - 5 weeks. Not sure if they can move than fast though, if they really are going to do all the work stated.
EH could be even better than previous. Love to see the finished product!

Thanks all... I'm looking forward to it, too. My timing just seems to be bad. But if that's what it takes to make the place better, so be it. It's more important every year as my grandsons get bigger and able to take trips with PapaJack... 8^)... Oh well... damn the torpedoes... full speed ahead! Hope to see some of you on the river. I'll probably be parked in the park by Friday afternoon. "Hotel Jacques" is ready except for stocking clothes and food.

Will there be any fishing in that stretch and downstream?

Oh I just saw Jennaayyy1's post. I guess I'll stick to BB for the upcoming trip. Like many though, there are lots of spots there I have yet to explore

I know that I am probably in the minority but I hate the new Evening Hole and would not mind if it takes them a year.

Everybody hates the New EH, Bill. I think what happened in the flood is the EH Bridge was clogged with debris, slowing the water down, causing it to dump gravel all through the EH, kind of evenly as it turned out. As of now it's mostly just a straight, even-depthed channel. So they're going to scrape out the "substrate", build up the banks, and build a couple of islands, or something, that will divert the current in different directions. I'm so happy they're doing that. It's going to be out of commission for a little while, but it ought to be well worth it.

Well.... Grandkids showed up and will delay me for a day. I'll be there Saturday sometime, depending on what time I can drag myself outa bed... after being abused by a 2-year old and his 5-year old sis.... 8^) Life is good...

The fry from the fall spawn in November should be well on their way to swimming up into smaller water and out of the way. The spring spawn should start soon and hopefully these enhancements will help with holdover areas for all fish. Jay from ODWC worked on it until yesterday. He got a lot of work accomplished. Unfortunately, the scouring didn't leave much substrate to be dug out too deeply but he tried in areas where he could. A lot of that gravel is only 2-6" deep so really the flood scoured and brought the overall level of the river down. Jay said people were catching fish in areas he had just worked 5 minutes after. EH has a ton of nice fish in it. This construction shouldn't bother them too much. Everybody hates the New EH, Bill. It's great that the dreadful post-flood EH (where a perfect cast is required to catch a 4" trout) is being restored. However, I'm a bit concerned on what the effects might be on the stream just below the EH bridge, which I now consider to be even better water than the old EH.

Ya, the only thing I don't like about the "Hickory Hole" is that it's not off limits to "meat fishermen". It's pretty nice fishing down through there. Still I can't wait to visit the Evening Hole after restoration is completed.

I don't think Hickory Hole is going to be changed too much by this. If anything, flows might change a bit but this restoration allows for ODWC to be able to drive their stocking truck up to the gravel bar which will be nice for them instead of dumping from bridges. I know EH is historically significant and loved by many here but I am really wanting to challenge my skills and try more of spillway sometime. It is such technical fishing up there and I want to get better at fishing that kind of water. EH is fantastic for fishing dries, which I mainly do there, but it also gets a lot of pressure.

I was planning on taking a day trip to BB on Saturday with my uncle and we usually fish the EH. I just found out about the repairs and was wondering how that's going to affect the fishing this weekend. Should we be worried or put off the trip for another weekend?

Several more photos ( I think Eddie shot them ) and notes about the as yet incomplete Evening Hole work are on the foundation site. Good thing is that there's more work to come.

Just back home from my trip. I got there Saturday and got my favorite campsite, but the water was hosed... Haha... (yeah... pretty lame)... I didn't fish EH at all. Bluff hole was covered up Saturday evening... They only worked on EH a couple of days, and it still looks just like a straight channel to me. I'm sure over the next few weeks it will take shape. More in fishing reports...
