I had a euro leader on my 10' 4wt BVK and I got it down to casting 30-40 feet even with a dry dropper! The main thing is learning the timing

Oh, no kidding! What was your line, do you remember? Mine's Rio Gold, I think. Did you use some euro-specialty line?

Casting the long euro leader by way of normal fly line cast is easy, but then you are no longer fishing the euro leader as it was meant to be fished. You are not lobbing 30-40' of straight mono euro leader, I promise you. That's the point with this method- there is no cast.

I fish a 9ft. 5wt four piece fast action rod, 5wt forward taper line, a 9 ft. 5X tapered leader with a loop on the end that I attach to the looped end of my fly line and I use a surgeons knot to tie on some 5X or 6X mono tippet to the leader. In faster shallow water I use a single bead head soft hackle with no strike indicator, in slower deeper water I'll use a tandem rig where depending on the size or type of the fly I'll tie on the lower fly to the shank of the upper or perhaps from the eyelet of the upper hook or perhaps leave a very long tag end on the upper fly to tie on the lower. I call this a normal setup. No euro rod, no furled or hand tied progressive step down leaders, no macrame of knots, no flouro tippet. I have not yet met any Europeans fishing on the LMF. Thing is, despite all this I still catch trout. What on Earth am I doing wrong? It's a wonder anyone anywhere on this planet has caught trout by any fly fishing method other than the present "in thing" going on now. Is there such a thing as a Euro dry fly fishing method and does it preclude the old fashioned way?

I mean I use airflo super dri elite fly line on my 4wt (super awesome line btw) and I connected a 30' leader to it so I was casting pretty much straight mono with smaller flies. With larger flies I was definitely lobbing except on longer casts I perfected this weird little cast that could shoot line like none other. Now I just have a normal 12' leader on my 4wt and have a euro leader and line on my 10' 2wt

Also the 10' 2wt casts the leader and euro line surprisingly easy and the 10' 4wt is superb for indicator fishing since it's basically like a 9' 5wt power wise and the extra foot is amazing for mending

You guys and all your rigs. I hafta get by on the few rods n' reels and line I already have. I think I finally figured out what I'm doing wrong. Say I'm in a fishing position such that the water current is flowing downriver to my right. Makes sense then that I hold my rod in my right hand so I can manger the line as it goes to the right. The same ought to apply if I'm fishing such that the water is flowing to my left then I ought to hold the rod in my left hand. Thing is, with all the newfangled gear out there I suddenly seem to think I need two rod setups for each situation...a right handed rod and right handed fly line and right handed leaders and tippets and split shot and flies for when the flow is to my right and another setup for when the flow is to my left. Do you guys have those? Good thing I can at least switch the spool on my reel to crank right or left but the rest of the rig seems lacking. Maybe my drifts are all wrong because I was using a left hand Palsa or Air Lock or Thingamabobber when a right handed one was called for? That woulda whacked my drift for sure I bet. Maybe the fly shop has that stuff? Is there a website I can visit to buy that kind of gear online? For the price you pay for Trout Hunter flouro you'd think they'd offer both left and right hand tippet spools. Can't find any though.
Gonna show up in the red zone one day with a spin rod and reel, some six pound test and a cone head streamer on the end with maybe a muddler minnow as a dropper trailing behind it (barbs bent down!) and see how I make out. Prolly work out really well in Zone 2 or dredging the big deep holes in the Spillway. Euro spin technique. And the rod and line will be unidirectional.

Fly fishing is like Baskin Robins, 31 flavors and I like more than 1.
I'm cool with whatever flavor makes a person happy and I might try a taste of everything. I fish/fished glass rods. Some people hate them and can not understand why anyone would use them but for certain stuff I love them.
In some of the places in Spillway creek that would suck a indicator under I really liked that green 30' of 20lb test line with the Rio sighter tippet to flouro I made but would rather use a tapered leader with indicator in most other places.

As a self proclaimed ultra cheapskate I use a short 5.5 ft furled leader, it's been going strong for 2.5 years now. Use it with the same rod/reel combo for dries, streamers, and tight lining. Works good enough for me.
