Hi all. Looking at a new pair of sunglasses. Anyone have Costa 580s or the Smith Chromapops? Wondering how wearers of them think about them on the river. Thanks.

I have some "knock-offs", called Sunclouds. I bought bifocals with 2.5 magnification. I wish the magnification was even a little stronger, but it was the highest magnification they offered. I don't know how they compare to name brands that I believe are a lot more expensive, but they suit me well. These were $70 or $80 or so.

I'm also in the market for a good pair of sunglasses. I've always fished cheap ones and I do believe a higher end pair would suit me better. When I say cheap, I mean the $20 ones from Cabelas. The polarization on those do work to an extent but I'm confident the higher end brands will do better. I've been looking at Smith's guides choice. I think I have found a website with a sale going on for these. I need to go find a place to try them on in person though- my issue is that I have a really big head and sunglasses and hats have to fit right and they can be hard to come by. When I say a big head, I mean most of my hats are on the last notch. My question for you all is what is the preferred lens color? Most people say amber does best for general fishing conditions, but then there are browns and rose colors and different variations. Please share.

Hankinsfly, I have amber. I like them, but I don't know what to compare them to. I think in the description of most of the expensive glasses they'll tell you which are made for big fat heads. Mine is one, too. I bought the model that was made for wider heads. They fit pretty well!

Hank,
You'll definitely want to try some on before you buy, no matter the brand. As far as color goes, they say that copper or amber is best for conditions faced by trout anglers. Both Smith and Costa make so many different glasses I'm sure you'll find a pair that fits you best. The lenses are important, but if they aren't comfortable or don't fit you right then what's the point. My Smith's are copper Polarchromatic so they do change tint based on lighting.
As far as glass vs plastic goes.... Glass will be a little more scratch resistant but less shatter resistant if you drop them. Glass should be optically clearer but you may not be able to tell (I doubt most people can)...

I love my costas, but I only wear them in a boat or at the lake. I lean toward buying several colors and fits of $30-$50 glasses. I tend to scratch/drop/lose them way too often and it would hurt more to lose a $300 paid of Chromapops or 580's.
My estimate is that cheap sunglasses are about 80% as effective as really good ones. If that 20% makes a difference to you, go Smith or Costa. If it doesn't, visit Cabelas or Bass Pro/

I have the Costa 400G Hamlin and to be honest I wish I had gotten the Smith Dolen. The Costas are heavy and they fit so close they are actually hotter to wear because not much air gets between them and the skin.
I don't lose or scratch too bad [knock on wood] like Jeff was talking about so I tend to buy a little more expensive brand of sunglasses. Since I work on a golf course and still have my landscape company part time I am wearing them all day though. My backups are a pair of women's Oakleys that I bought on clearance for $35 and I really can't tell much difference looking in the water between them and the Costas. I always get Brown lenses.

Costa's are good, had a pair of the blackfin camo with amber 580 glass. Only reason I picked them up was black Friday sale for $80.00. Great clarity for beavers bend waters. Frames started to irritate my sinus's so passed them on to my son. They fit his face better than mine. Now a pair of $20 polarized work for me till I find some Costa's that fit right. Might look into the smith's. What ever you decide on to buy make sure that they fit. Put them on and look around for a few minutes or 5 to make sure they are comfortable for extended wear.

Found Costas in a couple of stores, tried on some models that fit my fat head. After some research and the ability to try them on, and it appears I've found them relatively cheaply, I'm considering the Permit and the Bloke models.

Have two pair of Smith Guides Choice. Both are techlite glass. One pair is Polarchromic Copper Mirror and the other is Polarized Green Mirror. I have never worn a better pair of Sunglasses. Thats my humble opinion.

Hey kingnothing, can I ask you how you go about getting sunglasses from a high end company in your prescription? Do you have to get your eye doctor to give you your prescription and then send it to the sunglass company? Or do you go through your eye doctor's office and have them order the frames, or what? I'm kind of curious. My "eye doctor" is a real generic outfit out of Texarkana that my insurance company sends me to. Thanks.

I went through my eye doctor's office, but you can also order them from framesdirect.com if you have your prescription to send in. You can also go to the Maui Jim web site to find a prescription retailer near you.

I was at Academy today (my favorite store) and saw some $40 Strike Kings. They do seem like some decent glasses on the cheaper end. I need to just break down and get myself a pair of Costas or Smiths, but those probably are a good pick on the cheaper end products.

Pardon the selfie, but I went with Costa Del Mar, Permit in 580 poly. They do seem very clear and make certain colors more vibrant, like red colors. Make spotting rainbows better, like that one in EH, right golferjeff?

That is exactly why I like amber/brown, they make the browns easier to see!
