After fishing today and switching between my Rio Flouroflex 6x and my Seaguar Grand Max 7x I have to say that Rio needs to step their game up! I felt incredibly more confident in the seaguar than the Rio and popped less fish off on the seaguar as well! I'm most likely going to start transitioning over to the seaguar since it's only $3 more for the same size spool.

Fished with golferjeff a few months ago. I told him I heard good things about trout hunter. He told me he had bad experiences with it. We fished briefly at the bluffs. I had a good strike on a small streamer and had a good visual on it. Tippet popped upon hookset, and it was 5x. 5x should be stout enough for a firm hookset, at least it is in all other brands.

I have come to dislike Trout Hunter. It seems to break easy, knots don't hold, and it appears thicker than Orvis and Rio products. I gave my 5.5x to hankinsfly and he promptly discovered the same thing. I almost exclusively use Orvis Mirage Fluoro and Superstrong nylon. My guides in Arkansas and Colorado have begun using Seaguar and I have heard and seen good things on that product. It is cheaper and larger spooled than Orvis products. That's my 2 cents.

The seaguar grand max is amazing stuff! I'm hoping to try out the Hanak tippet to see how it is (it's 14.99 for a 50m spool and 29.99 for a 150m spool). I figured I'd get a 50m spool to test out and if it's as good as I've heard than I'll throw down for some 150m spoils because that's super cheap for so much tippet

I've always had positive results with Rio tippets. Not to say I haven't lost flies in fish's mouths upon hookset, especially when swinging soft hackles, but it's mostly good results.

I buy whatever Eddie carries. I think it's Rio. Are you guys trying to make me neurotic about this?

I have never heard anyone say anything bad about trouthunter (not calling yall liar's). I have been fishing it for years, mainly 6x and 6.5 and never an issue. Now Cortland just came out with new tippet and so fair i hear its the best stuff out there.

I generally buy whatever flouro is on clearance. I have the Orvis that they had for like $4 a spool last winter when they were changing and I have some Scientific Angler 100M Guide spools that I gave $12.99 a spool for. I have heard that Seaguar makes the SA flouro and I like it.
I will say my favorite is probably the Trout Hunter because of how flexible it is and the thin diameter. Different stroke for different folks I guess.

I used to go around with a 200 yard spool of 4lb Berkley Vanish for most of my trout fishing. It did as good as any high powered $20 tippet. Thought I needed to fit in with all the dudes with 16 spools of various sizes of nylon and flouro tippet hanging off my vest. Gonna go back to my old ways.

If you use flies with large eyes it works great for the price. I had some myself back before the flood and gave what I had left with some Near Deers to a couple that were just starting out. They caught several at the spillway so I was glad I could help them out. Also poor people have poor ways so I'm not giving $20 for a 30yard spool of tippet. That is why I hit the clearance bins

Hey Sunline SC Sniper flouro is pretty good and I've been thinking about getting some! 2lb is 6x and 3lb is 5x but knowing most lines they probably run stronger that advertised. They also turn out to be pretty close to stated diameter

I hear ya, turfdawg!! That's one reason why I camp. Other reason is it's just more fun. Unless it's too hot at night. But here ya go, I ain't too proud! That stuff will work down to a 16.

I have a few spools of Trouthunter (1X, 4.5X, and 7X), but I have to say I dislike their tippet spools--mainly the fact that if you pull off more than you need there's no way to really get the tippet back on the spool easily. With Rio, it's a cinch--you just rewind a bit. So you end up with a bit of tippet material dangling from the spool that gets all kinked or whatever. I use Rio mostly but I'm gonna try to use my 4.5X more.
Interested to hear more about Seaguar and Hanak...

I'm 100% in love with seaguar and I believe it's one of the best tippets on the market. I'll update on the Hanak when I try it

Just going to throw this out there. Unless you have a truly bad spool of tippet, there is probably a different reason you are breaking fish off.....It is always easy to blame the equipment but usually it is angler error.

I honestly think I got a bad spool! When I first started taking it off the spool it had nicks and scrapes from the metal piece in the elastic

Definitely sounds like a bad spool. And I wasn't talking about you specifically! Sorry if it came across that way. I was just using the term you to refer to every fly fisherman and how fly fishermen in general will blame equipment rather than angler error!

I feel there are differences in tippet though! Like some cheaper tippets and Rio flouroflex are more like flouro coated mono (I'm sure that's how Rio is able to get the "flex") while Seaguar and others have this almost opposite clearness with more stiffness

Pretty sure no user error on a snapped tippet upon hookset!

I've found that a San Diego jam knot is the best about keeping the knot from slipping out or popping! I usually use a 7 turn SDJ on the tippet ring side and a 5 turn SDJ to attach the fly

Nothing like tippet talk to bring me back from the dead. Back when I used to know how to fish, I tried them all. In my opinion, nothing is more supple, but has the strength of Trouthunter.

Well there ya go.... Seems like TH is love it or hate it. Maybe I just got a bad shipment. I rarely break Orvis Mirage even at 6x. My knots are another story.....
