This, my friends, is a recipe for a great weekend!
Not much fishing for us these days.
Something to do with house hunting and work.
But finally the stars aligned: we were able to leave the ruthless world(*) on Friday after lunch and were headed off to green Arkansas with great weather in the forecast.
Four of our friends were tagging along. The plan was to camp, float the Ouachita river near Oden, AR on Saturday, enjoy some good camp food and fish a bit.
The campgrounds were awesome. Majestic trees. Right by the river and we were basically the only ones camping in there this weekend.
We started the 8 miles float on Saturday morning around 10 AM.
Us with our inflatable kayak, our friends with two rental canoes.
The river was gorgeous, flowing clear and cool between bluffs and green trees.
We found a good shaded spot and stopped for lunch.
The spot was great also because it also looked very fishy. Very smallmouthy to be more specific.
And so after a quick sandwich, I tied on a good looking green and black WB on my 5-weight. It was time to attempt to check that box off my list: catch my first (not-a-dink) smallmouth on the fly rod.
I've always read that you should fish the water for SMB the same way you fish it for trout.
And so it did not take very long. I found a nice run behind a boulder, swing-swang-swung the wooly and ... BAAAMMMM!
Pure happiness ensues, and my first true brownie to hand!
Another pic to admire the bronze back, before the "merci mon ami".
After this, that was it for me.
Box checked.
I was relaxed and enjoyed showing (or did my best at showing) my non-angling friends how to cast and spin fish.
The sunfish were fearless. Some specimens were caught. All had fun.
As you can see from the last pic, a day on the water gets you appetite going.
And the best remedy for that is an improvised Korean BBQ:
Cheers !
*Obscure reference.
If you get this one, I owe you a bottle of wine.
