Hey folks, I just joined the Message Board today. My name is Wayne Meuir, I am 72 years old and live near Rockwall, Tx. A friend and I came up LMF on Wed, the 30th to fly fish for the very first time. I think I wasted a lot of years not starting earlier. This is about as much fun as an old guy can have.
We went to the Fly Shop there and hired a young man named Doron to guide us. We had a blast, he taught us a lot, and we caught a few fish (and didn't catch a lot more that we should have) My biggest concern before the trip was the cold. It was 40* when we got to the River and I never got the least bit cold.
My biggest problem is that my legs are not as strong as they need to be to walk effectively against the current. I am working on that and hope to do better next time. We are going to try it again in late February sometime and will try to get Doron to help us again until we learn enough to go out on our own.
I did manage to catch one native fish, only about 8" and Doron tried to explain to me how to tell the difference between the stockers and the natives, but it went right over my head.
I can't wait to get back up there. We netted 12-13 fish most about 10". Hooked up and lost at least that many. All of them went back in the River. Beautiful place and there was not very many people until about an hour before dark when a few others showed up.
I guess all this rambling you can tell I am excited about it.

I think I may have seen you guys at the Evening Hole Wednesday afternoon. There were 2 gentlemen fishing with a guide when I got there and they appeared to be hooking up with some fish. You may want to consider purchasing a wading staff. I'm 55 and already thinking about getting one as I've taken a couple of pretty good spills in the last year or 2 while wading around in my smallmouth bass streams (which tend to be pretty rugged areas). Welcome to the forum!!

I would recommend to anyone fishing LMF to use a wading staff. I am 59, and I've used one for years. It's saved my butt many times, and one of those times was a surprise encounter with a water moccasin at the Blue River.

Welcome to the club. We have another board member that lives in Rockwall and my grandparents lived there also. As others have mentioned wading staffs really help and I will also suggest a long handled net. Hope to meet you soon.

Thanks for the welcome, guys. danimal, that was my Friend and I that you saw. It looked like you were hooking up on some as well. Yea, I think a staff is in order. The long handled net as well. I doubt that I would have ever landed a fish if I had been netting them myself. I found that I don't have quite enough hands to manage everything at once right now. I broke off a couple of times because I got in too big a hurry. I began to slow down near the end of the day and let the fish wear themselves out. I am not used to fishing with line that light.
We are going to use a guide at least one more time before we try it on our own. There is so much to learn. We didn't even know how to rig the flies or indicators before we came.
I actually live in Lavon which is just North of Rockwall. My wife is disabled so I can't get away very often, but I will just do my best to get up there as often as I can.
