Well, it's official. I will be spending most of the summer in COlorado and maybe Utah and POSSIBLY Yellowstone. 72 days total fishing and traveling.
First 2 stops, Platoro (Conejos) and South Fork (Rio Grande). 3 people joining me in PLatoro, 4 in South Fork. June 30 thru July 12. Back in DFW for 10 days on a commitment and then on to other parts of the Rockies.
Would love to hear some recommendations. Mostly south of I-70, CO and UT. I need a home base for 4-5 days each stop and campgrounds if you have them. Definitely hitting Cochetopa, Lake City, Conejos again, Salida/Buena Vista, Minturn (Eagle), Taylor Canyon, and Cimarron Valley. Happy to take any hints, advice, or other info. My return to DFW is October 4th, then one last trip to chase big browns on the Dream in late October.
Lemme hear from ya!

Damn Jeff, 72 days?!! Back home we would call this “les grandes vacances”. I’m jealous, to say the least!

Good For You! I'm excited for 3 days in Estes Park, my first time fly fishing in Colorado. I can't even imagine what 72 days would be like....

Only places I've fished in Colorado are Buena Vista and Crested Butte areas. Might want to hit Brown's Canyon if you haven't already -- the scenery alone is worth the trip and the fishing's not bad either. If you like small water nearby Chalk Creek has some decent cutties that love to chase streamers and the view of Mounts Princeton and Antero overhead are breathtaking. Clear Creek between Granite and Leadville is another small I one caught a few fish from after kayaking it (which was one of the more eye opening experiences in my lifetime LOL). Wherever you go -- be sure and post some pics for us!!

I might hit the Evening Hole on Saturday morning at 6 for a couple of hours. Match that!

JEzuz Jeff, first you win Mystery Fly, then this...you don’t need to go out and buy a lottery ticket because you are the luckiest man on this planet. As far as I’m concerned you already won a lottery getting to go fishing 72 straight days! Enjoy the trip. I certainly am in awe! In all the time I lived in Colorado between 1990 and 2003 (my late 20’s and 30’s), I fished just about everywhere but the Conejos. I want to fix that this fall. I do recommend you try the frying Pan and roaring fork as those will be in your general area once you are near Buena vista to minturn. As far as campgrounds, there are good ones on the Pan by the Reudi Dam. I’m staying the week of July 18 to 23rd there at the little Mattie campground. Go to recreation.gov for reservations. I’ll be back out there Aug 31 to sept 13. At that time I want to hit the Conejos amongst others. If you have any campgrounds to recommend in the area I’d like to hear from you. In the mean time good luck, stay safe, and have a wonderful trip!

My first leg was Conejos and Rio Grande July 1-12. We had a great time, especially the Conejos and the remoteness of Platoro. I think the summer will be good on the Conejos, but I would caution you on the early fall. There isn't going to be much water available. Flows are already low and will get lower. Lake Fork CG 17 miles in on FR 250 is a great CG. If you want more accessible, Aspen Glade on CO 17 is nice. Personally, I like the more remote ones where more people like me end up. On FR 250, Elk Creek, South Fork, Lake Fork are good CG in that order going north. Aug 31-Sept 7 I plan to be out west a little more.... Lime, Cascade, Piedra, and maybe Lake City.
I do plan to hit (and maybe float) the Roaring Fork and Colorado later in the trip. Probably september. I will also hit the Pan on my way up to the Eagle and Gore.
Lots of pics on facebook for anyone that wants to take a look at fish porn..... i put them on public forum. Jeff Cook

Sounds like you're on track for an amazing summer. I wish I could have stayed out there.
Sigh. Work. Ugh.
