My son is a Junior at MS&T in Rolla MO. and I was considering a family tent camping trip Thanksgiving week either around Southwest MO, Northwest AR, or maybe even Northeast OK a relatively short drive for him where we could meet up for a few days during his (and twin daughters) Thanksgiving break.
And where there might be a trout stream or River near a car accessible tent campground.
looking at Google Map it would appear that the area north west of Brandon MO or nearer to Joplin MO should have some decent trout streams. Not being familiar at all with that area thought I might ask here if anyone would be familiar enough with this general area (between us in the Texas DFW metroplex and Rolla MO) with good car camping and fly fishing.
Trust everyone is doing well in these surreal times and maybe see you on the LMFR late October or early November if I am able to make a quick trip.
Thank you in advance - Oscar

It depends on what exactly you are looking for as far as fishing goes and your ability level (i.e do you want harder to catch wild fish or easier to catch stockers), but Missouri is loaded with good places to fish, and Rolla is in the thick of it. Lots of good options within an hour drive of Rolla. Meramec Springs and Meramec River are probably 30 min away as is Little Piney. Montauk state park is a little further, maybe 45 min. Lots of wild trout creeks close to, Mill Creek, Blue Springs, Barren Fork etc. Like I said, really depends on what you’re looking for fishing wise. This guy’s webpage has some good info: www.missouritrouthunter.com/where-to-go-fishing.html

Hi Dainw thanks for the response and the MO link. As regards to type of fishing, for me it’s getting feet wet, peace & quiet if possible, and wary wild trout, but primarily wet feet and chance for traditional fly fishing.
looking at the various locations identified in the link you so kindly attached I should be able to find a campsite that will work in particular the ones further south and west of Rolla. Others as well for possible future trips nearer Rolla.
thank you again - Oscar
Note to moderator - I think this belonged in waters away from LMFR if you need to move it with my apologies.

Things are pretty dry in Southwest MO right now. There's really no water flowing that isn't coming out of the underground springs. Take the Roaring River near Cassville for instance. Over the last few winters and springs, the flow was usually between 150 and 300 cfs. Right now it's at 30 cfs. That equates to the full flow of the 25 mgd spring and that's it. I've been fishing at Crane Creek at little bit lately and the flow is down as well but not nearly as much - maybe half the wintertime flow. Crane is known for the infamous McCloud River Redband rainbow trout that were stocked there over a century ago and never since. Most of the fish I catch are pretty small but the water is so clear that spotting bigger fish is pretty common.

Spring fed, but it's not a tailwater.

Bill...best time to hit the current is second weekend in November and after. The trout park shuts down at the end of October for two weeks and reopens the second weekend in November to fly fishing, catch and release only, and only open on Friday through Sunday, closed the rest of the week.
This opens up some good water that would normally be covered up by bait fishers, but also means less people in general downstream in the blue ribbon stretches.

Can you still fish down stream of the park (Baptist camp area) during the week? Was thinking about going Veterans Day through Saturday.

Yes you can still fish the blue ribbon area through out the week. Baptist camp has been tough the last couple times we fished it. Best fishing for us has from about a mile downstream of tan vat up to the park boundary. This time of year I think fish push upstream to spawn so some of the lower accesses will seem to not hold many fish.

A bunch of us usually go right after thanksgiving. The areas in the park and just downstream seem to be filled with fish. Below Tan Vat and down to Baptist Camp still have fish, but you have to work for them. Great euro water though, as dain and aaron can attest to.
After the trout park re-opens for C&R, it is fun just to wander around. Lots of bigger fish available.
