I am heading up there to fish for the first time in 2 weeks. Luckily we will be there during the week so hoping I can avoid crowds. I have been reading a good bit trying to learn my way around before I get up there. Besides the recent water let off changing the landscape and pay for parking(just saw this today), is their anything else I should be aware of or areas to avoid? This message board has been great and I would have never known about this stuff if it wasn't for you all. I used to live in Colorado and have a good bit of experience nymphing which seems to be the most popular for the time of year. I am hopeful the more traditional winter small mayfly and midge imitations will work. I am in south Louisiana now so hopefully not too rusty. Thanks again for all of the good information.

14 dry fly has been good to me lately if you're into that sort of thing.

Thanks, I never pass up the chance of any sort of topwater fishing. I will give it a shot especially if the clouds are out.

Like your picture. Looks like "the Flats" section of the Frying Pan. Nice trout b/t/w.
I had good luck with a biot pmd nymph right after the water level went down. Good luck to you.

At this time of year I will wrap a little smidge of CDC onto a #20 - 22 hook with some olive thread, call it a BWO emerger, and swing it in the current. It's usually good for a couple of middling stocked trout. I'll fish a double rig that way with a zebra midge. Nice, lazy-man's way to hook a trout, when it works. Late AM, early afternoon is good for that. Also, any kind of PMD emerger when they start coming off.

Good eye, that is exactly where it is. I lived in Denver for 4 years but only made it to the Pan one morning, it definitely did not disappoint. Thanks guys, I figured I would start with some sort of rs2 and midge combo and go from there. I have a rs2 variation I used to tie that always worked well on the south platte.

If it's yuor first time, I suggest moving around. Spillway creek is the most 'western' of the sections. You could drop it in anywhere in Colorado and it might not look out of place. This time of year, just fish anywhere you don't see people. There are fish holding from spillway dam all the way to powerhouse. If you want solitude and they aren't generating, hit zone II.

Well it looks like the highs will be in the 20s and 30s with chances of snow the days I will be there. Any suggestions for easiest access and places I can keep my waders out of the water the majority of the time(even thought the water may be warmer than the air temp). I assume afternoons will be my better option in these conditions.

At the Evening Hole, upstream of the second bridge down from Spillway Creek, or the third(?) bridge coming the other way, one could pretty much fly-fish effectively without ever entering the water.

I really appreciate it, my hands are already cold just looking at the weather at the beginning of next week.

We decided to go up a day early, and leave between the two snow storms. I fished Saturday evening for about a hour and caught one nice big fat rainbow at the evening hole bridge. I was shocked at how fat it was and will try to get a picture up later. It has a busted up nose so some of yall have probably seen it before. My guides kept icing up even though I was trying not to strip line and keep things simple so I left. Of course on my way home the sun finally came out. Was excited to catch my first fish there but the weather was too bad the rest of our trip to get out again. Our drive home on Tuesday was interesting to say the least.

Sometimes one fish is enough to give you a good memory! Even no fish can be that way too. Glad you experienced that fat rainbow. Would love to see picture of it too.

Same spot where I caught my first trout on LMF. It was a tiny brown though. I seem to find the bigger ones at Power Plant.

Well I could not figure out how to turn the photo. I caught it on a size 20 grey rs2 variation I use to tie for Colorado. It was chunky and several lbs.
