Hey everybody, I take back everything I may have said in another thread about the PTB at BBSP not caring about us fly-fishermen {weep}. They pulled the stop logs yesterday. I know. I was fishing, was able to see them pulling them when I went into the Fly Shop. They were all as surprised in there as I was. They had been bugging the PTB to pull them, but had been given the idea that it just wasn't going to happen for reasons that have been discussed. Well, they have. Better late than never, much better! I wonder how long it will take fish to move into our favorite winter fishing areas, or if they're already there. I hope to fish again next week. Maybe I'll be able to find out. I meant to post this last night, but {ahem} forgot to. God bless the PTB for thinking of us poor fly-fishers (or whatever their reasoning may have been. Who cares!).

AWESOME!! Now the fly fishers will have new riffles to fish, and the tail-outs below them will give many hours of fun! THANK YOU, jonbo, for sharing this! Day use area is ON, too! Wooo hooooo! JR

That's good to know. Never seen Beaver's Bend w/o the stop logs. When Jonbo posted that they pulled them, wife and I started talking about making a trip before they are put back.

That's good to know. Never seen Beaver's Bend w/o the stop logs. When Jonbo posted that they pulled them, wife and I started talking about making a trip before they are put back. I don’t know the stocking schedule / patterns and never have. There’s usually fish to be caught year-round without having to track the stocking truck. One area that really opens up and is wade-able for a long distance is the day use area over by the train and horse stables. There are several large rocks that the trout like to hide out around. A friend of mine has caught some really nice fish there in the past. Below that long run is an area I call ‘The Chutes’ where the water falls in numerous spots into the pool below. This can be a really good place to nymph fish. The tailout below all of that can be good, too, for streamers and soft hackles. I’ll stop giving away secrets now… JR

One good turn posting about the stop logs and the opportunity their removal presents deserves another in the way of photographs. This request is no doubt controversial since it requires nicely composed photos of the Day Use waters and the particular spots that make it attractive for fly fishing when the stop logs are gone. This request to aid and abet the enemy is about as absurd as asking for photos of the specific spots to fly fish in Zone 2. You either already know or you don't...and won't. Anyway, I'm asking. On a different subject I see the temperature in Broken Bow is 7. Just started snowing here in McLean,VA.

How are you, Grant? I thought I'd responded to you yesterday and wished all a Merry Christmas. It seems it didn't go through. I imagine you're having a white one there. Anyhow, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Now I’m hearing they only pulled at the fly shop and not swim beach.

Huh! I saw them pulling them at the Fly Shop. Another fellow said he saw them pulling them at the Swim Beach. I'll find out on Tuesday, God willing and the roads don't freeze. I'll let everyone know. Now, there's 3 stacks of logs, side by side, at each bridge. They pulled one of those stacks and left the other 2. I don't know if that's what they've done in the past or not.

Either way, I’m gonna fish Wednesday. Hopefully, they’ve pulled them both places. Normally, jonbo, they only pull one stack out. After all, the guy I talked to said that the reason they stopped pulling them was because the logs get torn up and then they have to have more ‘specially cut’ to go back in. I really appreciate them making an effort, even if they only pull them at the fly shop bridge. It will open up quite a bit of area to fly fish. JR

I wonder if the LMFR Foundation could initiate whatever it takes for the park to have spare stop logs on hand. Justification for expenditure could be for seasonal stream flow management / sport fishing improvement. Say, did they (the Corps, the state, whomever) ever unblock, unclog, improve the flow through the dam further down river of the old park dam?

I don't think they've ever done anything to unclog that dam, Fenwick, as far as I know. But guys, I fished today, and what Turfdawg heard is right. The stop-logs have been pulled at the Fly Shop Bridge, but not at the Swim Beach Bridge. I got bad info on that. I did go have a look at the Day Use Area. It looks as great as it ever has. I didn't fish it though. The fish were biting for me in the EH Area on tiny RS2's in BWO colors. Lots of BWO's about.

I agree that nothing was ever done to unclog the re-reg dam. It’s been many years since I’ve heard anything about it. The BWOs were hatching off last time I was there. Lots of them. Everywhere. I had good luck with BWO dries in about a size 18. Thanks again for the report… and letting me down easy before I got there to find the stop logs still in at Swim Beach Bridge. Maybe we have something to look forward to??? JR

As previously stated, I went fishing today, Wednesday, 12/28/22. It sucked. I caught 2 fish. After being crowded out at one of my favorite spots, I drove around the park a little bit.
Un.be.liev.able crowds! People everywhere! I don’t know how guys can say they enjoy fishing evening hole when it’s so crowded your lines drift across each other!
The stop logs are out at the fly shop bridge. I did fish the day use area for a little while just before I headed home. It was actually the only place I found that wasn’t crowded. Still, no bites there. I waded down to the chutes below day use. No action there, either.
I tried several different methods with not as much as a sniff. Everyone I talked to had the same story. I believe there was just too much activity on the banks, and it had the fish locked down on the bottom.
2 fish.
It was a beautiful day. I enjoyed the weather and the scenery. I had some good laughs with a new friend. He had been skunked. And he drove at least an hour more each way…

I knew it would probably be pretty crowded since it’s the holidays. We just fished around cardiac hill. Had plans to fish from the spillway to middle spillway but it was crowded so we just stayed in that area. I'm way out of practice. Hooked 3 browns (1 very nice) but didn’t land any of them. It was just a rainbow day.

I had a thought after I talked to ‘the powers that be’ about pulling stop logs and stocking fish… instead of stocking Zone 2 with trout, why don’t they make it into a walleye / smallmouth / crappie fishery??
