So it looks like campsite fees have gone up. The developed sites like fern are $33 now. You still can't reserve primiti sites and no pricing information is given. I'm assuming that the use fee is included with the campsites like with the developed and rv sites. The last time we were there the primitive sites were $18. And we like to camp that way but those pit toilets haven't been cleaned since the 90's. Anyway, I'm not sure is I'll be camping when I come up. if my friend comes with me we might get a hotel or cabin to spilt the cost. Otherwise I might just come for the day. Or do what my brother would do. He'd park in hickory along the road with the other cars and sleep in the back of the truck. That was before the fees and you never saw a ranger.

I know this doesn't help with the toilet issue but you can reserve the primitive sites. At least on Grapevine and Hickory you can. Just like reserving a developed site.

I was on the reservation site last night. Hickory and grapevine were blocked out on every date so I thought maybe they weren't reservable. i can't believe that those sites would be booked every day in February. We've been there in January and February and had the primitive area to ourselves. I'll look again. I'll probably get a site in fern. Despite being a backpacker, I like to be close to a real bathroom when I can. Plus if it's super cold I might bring a small heater or electric blanket. I say that and I'll stand in freezing water with snow falling and ice in my guides waiting on one more bite.

Okay so I went back on and this time instead of selecting tent sites I left the fields open and now it shows all hickory sites open. $19

I believe, too, that you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the toilet situation, too. As I stated in another post that all the money collected for parking fees HAS TO go toward park infrastructure upgrades and improvements. Toilets included, there have been lots of new picnic tables set in place. The area that used to be lost creek is now a huge parking lot with said picnic tables everywhere. Toilet facilities have been replaced all over the park. Some of the showers are even like a car wash… you have to pay to use the facilities!
Maybe a day trip for reconnaissance would be advisable prior to booking a camping spot?

We're going to reserve a site in fern. February 5th and 6th. I'm teaching my friend to fly fish so she can do it when we come up there.

I camp there a lot. The restrooms are very clean and am suprised at the quality of tp actually. The newer showers down by Pine Ridge are great and I have never seen a pay shower in the park. The push button showers in Fern and cypress are cold and often closed when below freezing.
I see people camping in the day use area across the river from hickory all the time. Have thought about outlawing them also but like to not worry about being kicked out. I don't see many rangers and sometimes wish that there were more. Have had a few issues with jerks playing loud music all night. Overall the crowds are the worst thing to me personally, especially when it gets warmer. Going in Feb like you mentioned is a good time, some good fishing and not as many people especially if you go on a week day.

We have decided not to camp but just come up for the day. It a little over two hours from Tyler to have done day trips before anyway. It'll be cheaper. Plus we may hit a state park in Tx on the way home to camp or just nap. I have a park pass so it's much cheaper to camp if we're to tired to drive.
