I caught this guy near Creede and you can see the cool orange 'cut' clearly, so I know it is a cutthroat. There were a lot of signs in the area about Rio Grande Cuts, but I am thinking he is a Greenback Cut. He/she, actually I think it is a "she". I have spent a while looking, but an absence of red/orange on the gill plate has me a little unsure. This fish was the last one needed for me to complete the 'slam,' so "yeah for me!" Always hard to tell subspecies of Cutthroat.... but that looks like a Rio Grande. Probably a stocked version at that. The South Fork rio and tributaries are a testing ground for implementing and reestablishing Rio Grande Cutty populations. There is speculation they may eradicate Brookies, Browns, and rainbows in order to do so.
Def not a greenback. You have to go to RMNP or the Arkansas river basin for those (Collegiate peaks, Mt. elbert). Cool fish either way.

Hmmm. Well we were in an area where a truck could go, but not easily. And fish move, so plausible that it was a stocker. Very few folks hike that far up. If we eliminate Greenback, Rio Grande is likely. Stocker or not, the fish fought hard and it was a delight to net it.
Thanks!

I should have said 'Planted' rather than 'stocked'. Colorado wildlife has been putting in thousands of fingerlings in the rio drainage. especially in places where rainbows aren't present.

Definitely not a Rio Grande, Colorado, or Greenback. I'll back Pete, for sure a Snake River Cutt. Always a blast to chase Cutts, nice catch!

Snake River cutthroat for sure. Peter and Aaron- thanks, I was in the North Clear Creek, just below the falls, in the canyon. I heard or read you, Peter, were in Lake Cities or nearby there. I agree, from the pics on the net, it indeed looks like a Snake River Cut. Either way, It is prob the most interesting catch I have had. Didn't know there were such subspecies in S Colorado. I still have the 'slam' completed with this catch. Thanks -

ahhhh, if it was north clear creek, then you have yourself a snake river cuttie! Peter, myself, and a friend of mine caught about 200 of them up closer to the reservoir in 2015. one of the guys (Not me) got a super slam. Brookie, Brown, rainbow, SR cuttie, sucker, and cuttbow. I'll have to dig those pics out and show some. Good fish.
I reviewed the CO wildlife info - Pure Rio's are being planted above Rio Grande Reservoir in the tribs. No mention of them in N. Clear Creek.
Peter is based in Lake City for the summer and early fall. Several board guys have visited him at various times - I think Aaron, Eddie, TA go every year.

Geez....a "super slam?" I didn't know I was supposed to go for that!!! As if I have much control over that. Haha I did cast to some suckers above the falls. They were stacked up in still water above a beaver dam and I was hoping to catch one on a midge on the bottom, but no dice.
I am new to FF and fishing really, so catching what I did was memorable.
Thanks guys -

Yeah, man! Cutties are on my bucket list, for sure. I'm lucky living in Arkansas that there's pretty good trout fishing pretty close by. Where I'm unlucky is that Colorado is really out of my range. Hopefully, when I retire my poor old body will still be able to clamber around and I can hit up some Colorado creeks for some cutties!

Out of all the trout I’ve caught the one I can’t see to catch is the Cutty... the most willing to eat is my hardest catch in an odd turn of events!

I had a hard time with the Westslope Cutthroat in Idaho... I eventually caught some, but not as many as I had hoped.

The old phrase, "it ain't bragging if you can do it," comes to mind. Great fish....Not sure how you caught that one while standing on your head. Would have thought the backcast would have been all jacked up. I will go back next summer and catch some more colorful ones.

Peter, I do believe I see a wet San Juan worm (or is that a Squirmy?) laying on a rock next to your rod........ Incredible fish! The red on that Rio Grande is amazing.

Still one of the most beautiful fish i've ever seen. The picture didn't do justice to the red on that thing. It was like somebody took a paintbrush to it. And I'm still a little sore that I couldn't get the angle on him from my side of the creek. I was just happy one of us landed him though. Gorgeous
