I have decided to jump into the world of fly fishing. Some of you have given me some pointers on how to get started but I have a question about buying flies, where do ya'll get yours? I plan to buy what matches the hatch chart for the LMFR but where should I look? I found the site FLYdealFlies.com but I have no idea if its good site or not. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

I don't mean to be rude...
...but think about who's message board you are posting on.
We get this free forum to discuss fishing so maybe you could drop in and support them with a little business.

I have and I will but I also live three hours from there and can't simply drop by when ever I need to. By all means, if they have a link to shop their selection please let me know and I'll do so. Thanks.

I've never heard of that site or know of anyone that has used them. I tend to shy away from questionable sites like that unless I know different for sure. You're better off buying from reputable sites like Orvis, AvidMax, Blue Quill Angler, Tactical Fly Fisher and some others. That site says "quality" but you never know when you're paying such a cheap price. I wouldn't be surprised if they are tied on cheap hooks or poorly tied. And yes, support the local shop if you can. Just my advice.

Here's perhaps a better idea: If you know what flies you want, call Eddie at the shop and I'm sure they'd fill an order for you. If you're unsure what flies to get, he'd have no problem picking you a dozen or so flies that will work just fine.

I was up there the weekend after Labor Day. Hadn't been to BB since just before the last big flood and had not seen the new shop. Stopped in to browse around and asked a few questions like what's working at that moment. Ended up there for about an hour just chatting. Bought some new Korkers and a LMFR coffee cup and a slimline fly box. Eddie had Roberta put together a little package of select flies to try and gave them to me for free. I'd done OK but not great in the two days previous but took the flies from Eddie and fished the same waters as before with the same technique that evening and the next morning before we left...caught a lot of fish with those flies. It was a great ending to an otherwise so so weekend. I'll go back there every time I'm in the area.

I buy from 'The Fly Shop' and Orvis when at home, and I visit local fly shops whenever I travel. Locally, Tailwaters in Dallas and sometimes Bass Pro Shops when in a pinch. When at LMF, always stop by to see Roberta and Eddie. They feed Magick, too.
Tip - it always helps to get some flies locally, no matter where you travel. Good intel, maybe a variation to a pattern, and some local hot spots.

Coach Eddie and Ms Roberta are the best. When I decided to buy my next rod, I had Ms Roberta order it and I bought at BB Fly Shop. Bought my line (they put tied the backing on and set up the reel) and my wife's gear there... Price was comparable and I want them to stay in business and keep inventory. Just common sense.
I did order some flies on line before I first went to LMFR, but not since. I didn't know what Orvis was...
Hey SWAfisherman: try the podcast "2 Guys and a River". They have 2 yrs of podcasts and it is geared towards new anglers like you and me.

Does the BB Fly Shop take call-in orders and then ship it to you? I would love to order line, leaders and tippet when I need them. Living 3+ hours from the shop, I just don't get there very often.

Please post up the answer....I would do that. I fish warm water stuff around here and would do that on occasion. Last time I was there I bought a bunch of supplies for my bag.

My Wife and I made our first trip to BB earlier this month. Hadn’t fly fished in a long time and my local sporting goods store didn’t have gear for fly fishing (doubt they could even spell trout). Called the BB fly shop and Ms Roberta had everything I needed in stock. We had a great time.
