My wife and in-laws came up on Sunday afternoon. got a cabin up at Hochatown. Anyway My father in-law and hit forty foot hole at first light. There was a guide who left their client in the water at the end or the ripple. I was headed up to the bridge As Dad started fishing on the far right Of the hole. this Man there hollered out saying "You're fishing my water" Dad hollered back "what water is yours?" I didn't catch the rest of it but He soon came upstream to meet me. He said I looked down in the water, I didn't see that guy's name anywhere. I told Him that sometimes you just meet rude people up here. A guy pays $600 a day and thinks He's entitled to something.
There's a etiquette that most fishermen live by. But not everyone who's on the water is a fishermen. Maybe a guy who's never been fishing. He come's for the holiday and thinks gee, I'd like to try that fly fishing stuff. So $600 later and he's fishing but He's not a fisherman.

I think it was that blonde chick. She had a couple others in hickory hole.

Space is subjective and dependent on the conditions of any stretch of water. Usually if I'm into plenty of fish and others around me are not, I've been known to wave other people into the spot I'm fishing (my inner crappie fisherman speaking). I always leave lots of room to a stranger downstream of me. Within reason, ya know? Give them plenty of room and lies to fish. If there is no way the other guy can get into a fishable position, due to currents, whatever, and you're there, why not fish it? I'm a lot more relaxed than I used to be. Don't want to ruin my time on the river getting angry.

I think it was that blonde chick. She had a couple others in hickory hole. Jenny Woodruff? Where was she (if it was her) while this was going down? Seems like the guide could/should have approached your dad if they thought he was too close and asked nicely. Anyway, I ask the angler if I’m getting close if they mind (usually people don’t), but I try to give as much room as I think they can reasonably cast 45 degrees up or downstream.

It was not the "blonde chick" (her name is Morgan) that was in Hickory Hole. Morgan never even got close to 40 ft hole that morning. I was going down to the river with my clients when the guide you are talking about was leaving the 40ft hole area. I will not name who it was.
Also, all of our guides at BBFS teach every client we have about river etiquette. I promise you, that if I ever see somebody fishing a spot, I will never come up and fish their hole. Period. And I will only get close to you if I ask first, and only as a last resort. I see things on this river that would get your tires slashed where I live out West. Mainly a proximity issue. This river is quite a bit different in that we are all limited by fishable areas.
The situation which you posted would depend on a few things. Who was at 40ft hole first? The guy fishing it or you and your dad?

Well it sounds like "First Light" to you was a few minutes later than the guide's guys "First Light" and they were already there. I don't have a Dawg in this fight but have my opinion of 10+ years on every inch of this fishery and just when I think I've seen every thing possible, something new and entertaining comes along. I refrain from getting between the fighters and prefer to take the position of News Reporter and documentarian for when the real Cops show up. You wouldn't believe how twisted two sides and the truth can be. Hats off to anyone willing to try to teach "Guide" on public water, i spent many years on Fork with numerous boats following me and literally bumping and rubbing boat rails between trees n stumps. We were down there since last Friday and there was literally 2 places that had any fish most of those were 8" bows n Brns and all of them were gone over the course of a week. SWC is void of anything catchable from the dam to the upper evening hole temp walk bridge. I have no idea what anyone charges for guiding up there, nor the expectations of a potential client. Could be what most are seeking is how to hold a rod, cast the line, assemble the leader n multiple fly options and if they have a few rises that turn into a take n landing then their ecstatic, who cares if the fish they catch was caught everyday that week by someone else, is literally named and is a staple of the river, migrated from the Ocean, hold over from months or years, or recently dropped from a bridge n a truck. Memories are made and that's what we're all here for and no one can take those away. So we should try our best to make them positive. It's truly sad to have the river turned into what it has become and literally no where to go to fish where nobody has been in the past hour, or catch something that hasn't been hooked the previous day. I guess i'm going to have to bring the Ranger up to the Lake and start fishing north of the Dam.... Dam it .
