I lost two fish last week. One was my fault as I didn't keep the fish away from a log. I probably could have prevented that. The other, well the fish was in the grass and buried. I could see him buried. I patiently waited, but lost the fish as the fish exited the grass. Both broke the tippet.
My question - do the trout usually rub against a rock and dislodge the hook after they break off? I caught one trout with a little line hanging out of their mouth. It was a thick line, so I know it was from a spincast rod. I didn't pull on it as the hook was 100% swallowed. I just removed my fly and let her go. I have never caught a trout with a fly in the lip or mouth....surely they shed the fly or I would have seen one in a trout, right?

One more reason for barbless hooks

I had a large fish break my tippet in EH during trout camp. The gentleman fishing just upstream said it came right past him rubbing its face into the riverbed trying to dislodge the fly. However it was unsuccessful because it returned to the spot I hooked it a few minutes later, and we could see my indicator trailing a couple of feet behind it. LOL. The midge was barbless so I'd like to think/hope it eventually came out.

Right around there is a rock coming out of the water and I had a rowdy rainbow break my tippet shooting around it. Another person told me that happened to them on the same rock as well.

Need to get a few more nymph rigs into him. “He’ll never take down three barrels.”

Todd - if you were fishing in the grass, you probably weren't catching much. Fish need water to live - haha.
Certain holdover fish certainly have rocks and structure they like to use to break off. EH fish in particular. The 'Old' confluence hole and island were especially great this time of year, but the fish were trained to bury themselves in the brushpile. The largest EH fish I ever caught I had to dislodge from the brush.
Most barbless hooks will come out pretty easily. even barbed ones seem to unless they are hooked in cartilage areas.
