I have a Redington I.D. 5/6wt Reel and extra spool for my 9' 5wt rod. I was looking at getting a 7'-6" 3wt rod. What issues would I encounter if I put a 3wt line on the extra spool so I could use the one reel on both rods?

1) You'd need a bunch of extra backing to fill out the reel, or underfill the reel and have the line on a very small diameter arbor 2) The weight of the reel would probably be a little heavy for the 3 wt rod and throw off the balance a bit if that's something that's important to you.
Neither of those things is necessarily a deal breaker, honestly, but option B is go buy a $30 reel off amazon, since the reel on a 3wt is generally not going to matter.

I say cut the extra weight and imbalance and buy a small arbor 3wt reel and line. Even a new kit can be found for under $100. You will like it in places you want to use the 3wt rod (small creeks, panfish, etc)

I guess having an inexpensive 3wt reel is better than changing both the reel and spool in mid-stream if I want to switch to my 5wt.
