Seems like this series is popular - enjoy this one - 2 parts.
1. What is the coolest thing you have seen while fishing? 2. do you keep a fishing journal - why/why not?
1. I am a newbie at fishing, but seen a few things: a heron trying to gulp down a stocker without losing it, a bald eagle as I was landing a trout (lucky timing), aggressive snake.....but my answer is - I caught this medium sized bass and I had just increased the size of my clouser, but inside his mouth was my clouser AND a huge crawdad - both! I should have taken a pic. Hungry fish, huh. I have heard similar stories of gorging bass.
2. I do not keep a journal, but have told myself I need to. Can't decide if it should be hand written or electronic.
enjoy -

1. Coolest thing so far this year was catching a very colorful, TWO-INCH sunfish on a Size 12 Split-Case Baetis Emerger. The cool part was catching him while I was adjusting my strike indicator with the fly down by my knee. I felt a nibble, set the hook, and pulled him straight up!
2. I keep what I call a photo journal. I try to take a pic every time out either of a catch, the spot on the river, or something I see along the way. That gives me a time stamp and location stamp of when and where I’ve been. I DO keep a hand-written journal of the flies I tie though. I look back from time to time when I can’t figure out what something is. ;-)

1. Too many "coolest things I have seen" to count. More often not, I leave the water having seen something that was beautiful, fascinating or just crazy. One that stands out was at South Padre Island last year. I was fishing with a guide and we were chasing pods of hardhead catfish and sight casting to reds and specks that were also chasing the pods. I made a false cast that was a bit low to the water and a Specked Trout (a solid 20 inches plus) cleared the water trying to catch the fly. The guide and I both just stood there with mouths open. I had never seen it and he said it was the first time he had seen it in saltwater.
2. Never have kept a journal. I am not compulsive enough to do this. Fishing is my mental and spiritual break from all the other stuff in life. Journals seem too much like writing up a report or keeping stats. Maybe when I retire, I'll do some. I like to write and a fishing journal might be a good vehicle.

1. Here was something cool from Evening Hole this winter, and he still managed to eat my fly: 2. No fishing journal.

1. I was bass fishing with my buddy on his pond near Memphis, TN. My rod was laying across the boat with a spinner bait dangling about a foot above the water. A 10" Large Mouth came straight up out of the water and grabbed my lure. His head was a lot bigger in relation to its body. We concluded he was starving and was going after anything he could find. I threw him back, sat my rod down and he went for it again. We caught several normal looking bass that day but also caught a few in the 10" to 12" range with unusably large heads. Later on, My buddy asked a biologist and he had an explanation for this. But that was over 30 years ago and I can't remember.
2. I stared keeping a log when I got back into Fly Fishing last year. But I'm not near as detailed as the buddy I mentioned in answer #1. He has kept a log ever since he started fishing as a kid (I think he got the idea from fishing with Bill Dance). He has a folder on every place he has ever fished. He records time of year; weather and water conditions; lures he used (color and size) and the number of fish he caught on each. He fishes all over the county (including Alaska and Canada). When getting ready for a trip, he pulls out the folder for that area and plans accordingly.

I have had the regurgitating rainbows and browns too. Actually had a good one in Colorado this weekend - 2 minnows spit up and still went after my stonefly. Coolest thing - a moose and a black bear busting through the willows in Grant Teton NP while I was casting to 20" cutthroats. I didn't catch any. Journal - I keep a regular journal because I am slightly OCD. It includes many fishing entries

1. Shortly after meeting our guide on the white river last April to fish the caddis hatch and putting in at the boat dock, my buddy and I witnessed a bald eagle snatching up a rainbow trout out of the river. The eagle proceeded to follow us, majestically, for the the entirety of the almost 10 mile boat ride up to where we would fish.
‘Merica
Close second would be watching a smallmouth inhale a minnow in crystal clear water right at my feet on the baron fork last summer
Honorable mention is watching Todd Spey cast in a trout park.
2. This is fishing, not English class.

Busting up a flock of turkeys while walking down the trail to Rim Shoals, that was pretty cool, or having a beaver work up and down along the opposite bank while fishing the Lil' Mo' one evening, that was cool too. He was close enough to easily cast to and completely ignored me.

1. Elk cow and her calf walking across the river in front of us while fishing in Cherokee, NC. 2. I'm in the market for a journal but can't decided if I want to keep it digital or on paper. I would like to see some of the journals and what brands you all use but I will start another thread as I don't want to hijack this one. Attachments:

I know I already answered, but Jon's comment reminded me of when I waded upon a stump that turned out to be a dead beaver. I jumped about 6 inches I imagine (I have no 'hops' wearing waders, well I have no 'hops' period). I suspect a rancher upstream had killed it. Also that pic of me holding that dead Buffalo in the Spillway - I didn't know some of you would have thought I caught it (haha). I find the strangest dead stuff while fishing.

However, since I don't get good cell coverage while I fish and the fact that the human will likely be fairly dead, I think we will fish the next pool or two before we get too excited. If they were fly fishing, I bet they would approve.

1. Watching an eagle grab a trout while I was fishing below the swimming hole bridge. He then found a perch over the river (to heckle my fishing skills I suspect.)
2. No, got tired of writing. But I did keep a journal while my son was growing up hunting and fishing with me. Buy a nice leather bound journal and pass it on. Hand write in ink. It will a family heirloom. Hard to pass on a computer.

1. Had a herd of Bighorn Sheep come within 30 feet of me while fishing the Big Thompson just above Drake, Colorado a few years ago. Was pretty neat to see. 2. Yes, but its more of a word document / excel file that I somewhat track fish caught, location, weather, ... not a hand written journal.

Fishing in a stream in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and two deer came crashing through the river like they were being chased by something. They never even noticed me standing there until they were maybe 10 feet away.
Coming out of the Conejos river fishing the evening and running into a bear on the walk back from the river. That'll get your heart going
Spending a day fishing with John Geirach in Colorado. You want to talk about a man who has alot of stories. You could listen to him all day. And boy, does he like his coffee....
No fishing journal, but I know several people who do, and it is a wonderful idea. I really need to do it.

I started keeping a journal this year. Nothing fancy, just a small Rite in the Rain memo book with the basics... Date, time fished, sky conditions, water/air temp, barometric pressure, hatches, flies used, fish caught and overall outcome... that sort of thing--not really story material. I think a physical journal is the way to go, especially on a multi-day trip so you can write stuff down before you forget what happened...which reminds me I better log my NM trip from late March in my journal...

A guy drown as i pulled into the parking lot as i watched him bend over and splash water in his face below the Power House and they weren't generating. It was traumatic to see first hand how fast 1 gulp of water and down he went. I won't share the retrieval pic. again.
If he would've just relaxed threaded water and waited until i got down there he'd be alive today.

If nothing else it reminds us to always be VERY careful on the slippery rocks of the LMF.
