So after seeing Troutbum’s recently tied Decievers it made me long for fishing a tail water for stripers or hybrids or...something! Unfortunately with the lack of rain they were not releasing any water more than a trickle. So my hopes were a bit dashed. Hoping for there to at least be a couple hold over hybrids tried a few different things, a popper, a couple streamers, a bead head crayfish. I got several short strikes from some small gar. After a while I went on top of the spillway and took my chances at some of the fish I could see pooling up down below. Several bream played with my crayfish but couldn’t be hooked. Eventually I did cast in front of a large buffalo. It took a swipe at my crayfish pattern but foul hooked itself just above the nose. Well, now I was in a bit of a predicament as I was 20 feet above the water and the flood gate wall extended another 25ft beyond the waters edge. I had to walk him down the wall the “cast” my line over the wall. I was definitely glad I had my 8wt, he took some line even though he was fouled. I would pull it in close just to have it see me and power back out to the deep pool. This went on for a couple minutes until I could bring him in to where I could remove the imitation crustacean.
