I've heard someone on here mention something about a casino being build in or near the park, and then again today while I was in BB fishing a fella had mentioned that choctaw nation is building a casino on the lake. Is this true? I hope not, because it's going to make the current situation on the river even worse. What are your thoughts on this? Good? Bad? Apocalyptic?

Gambling can be addictive -- might even pull traffic AWAY from the lake/river.

Gambling can be addictive -- might even pull traffic AWAY from the lake/river. Hope so. Maybe it'll draw people off the river and into that casino and help alleviate crowds.

If you see me down by the river trying to hock my rod and reel, pay no attention.

It is going to be where those old A-frame cabins are just south of the north 259A entrance. It's not just a casino. It'll a whole resort with a casino and water park. From what I've heard, the plan is to make it the second biggest facility for the Choctaw Nation after their Durant casino. This will be several years down the road until it'll be up and running but don't be suprised if they put a travel plaza in the spot before anything else.

If I had to make a prediction, it'll increase day use crowds much more than it is now. I bet the winters will have alot of day time traffic also.
Also keep in mind that when a resort like that comes in, so will more dope and prostitution.

Speaking with a couple of guides from the fly shop who generously volunteered at our Reel Recovery retreat this past weekend in north Texas, they said it has been pushed back a couple of years. It is coming, though. So, how do we protect the river, when we know that the tourism numbers will increase exponentially over the next decade? We have to volunteer. We have to plan how best to use volunteers. It will be challenging, but with enough volunteer hours and education, we can manage the resource along with what the state and other authorities can do. I'll admit, this has been on my heart the past few weeks, and I am not up there as much as I used to be.
It is a resource we all cherish and it is precious to us as we don't have year round trout water anywhere else in the region. I think the true answer will come through us - the men and women who value fly fishing and the trout fishery. From restorative efforts to helping set up volunteer "samaritans" who educate other fishermen daily through the protected sections on what is and is not allowed to fundraising, the bulk will most likely need to come from private volunteers such as ourselves.

They're going to ruin that beautiful lake by putting a nasty casino on it?! Please God no. (And that's coming from someone who loves playing craps.) I think it will greatly increase day traffic in the rivers also. I'm 31, and I've been going to the park/river since I was 1 year old, and my grandparents had been going to the river before the damn was even built. I have incredible memories of that place, and it pains me to see it gets more and more populated/commercialized in the area every year.

So, I am a member of the Broken Bow Lions Club. We had a councilman from Choctaw Nation attend and speak at one of our meetings recently. The question was asked on the status of this land purchase. Apparently the Federal Gov needs to sign off and approve development of the land purchased by Choctaw Nation (if I understand correctly). From what was communicated by a member of the Choctaw Tribal Council, this approval is still pending. And apparently the tribe cannot comment or publically communicate on what the plans are or will be as part of the approval process. I did try to pry it out of him, no luck!
Also, if any of you live in the area and would like to attend or participate in the Broken Bow lions Club, let me know. We do good work with limited resources in a needy community. But fair warning, most of these members have a similar / warped sense of humor that you see in Fenwicks writings!

Commendable of you Hoss for the Lions Club particpation. I did review the Choctaw Nation website earlier this afternoon looking for news and though they mention their regional casino developments nothing appeared concerning Hochatown. Thanks for the meeting recap. Time will tell. In the meanwhile go fishing, take a hike on the David Boren trail and camp in the park. That's what it's there for.
