In my 11/4 report I mentioned that I spent an afternoon with a 7wt and streamers, I also mention losing fish all the fish that I managed to briefly hook into. It was brought to my attention by a trusted source that I was doing it wrong. If I were to have strip set the trout would have been netted. Being that I normally use streamers lake fishing for bass I don't normally strip set even though (in case it isn't already known to some) bass have "harder" mouths than trout. It seems to work for me since I maintain connection with my flies and bass hit the flies pretty hard setting themselves, basically. Once hooked I don't lose bass, on the fly, nearly as much as I lose trout. I'm also a weak setter across fishing in general ('cept for crappie I will set on them little boogers like my dinner depends on it), especially froggin for bass, which I love and totally suck at. Thinner diameter single hooks are my friends btw.
So I don't have any experience strip setting and need to work on it. I had a complete "well, duurrhh" moment when reminded of that set because I shoulda known better. Next round I will be more attentive and ready for strikes, since I really wasn't when they happened, and remember to leave rod down and strip into fish. I'm really excited to get back out and taste that sweet redemption!
Alot of the times I'll tightline a streamer through smaller holes and that has worked out better landing wise since, like Euro, I'm leading the fly through and I guess setting better on takes.

Once the logs are out, below powerhouse bridge is a great place to swing streamers. Below Hickory can be good too. I am by no means a streamer junkie, but I have found a nice firm strip set followed by a lift of the rod keeps the most fish buttoned up. You might find me in a certain area come Dec-Mar just drifting crystal buggers straight downstream....

I tried, this summer, tying up some craft-fur streamers. They ain't done nothin'. Buggers work, and oddly, the bunny-muddler things I've tied. They WAY ugly with my pitiful deer hair spinning that ends up all patchy, yet they work. Go figure. Me thinking it's really the bunny tail that makes the diff. Setting, basically my streamer technique is to let them set themselves as they usually hit hard. I ought to train myself to strip set. Why, I oughta...

Strip setting is so hard. I got yelled at a lot in Belize for messing that up -- it cost me at least two tarpon. It's a really difficult reflex to control. With bass and stripers I usually just strip until I feel the fish come tight, then lift. That has (so far) pretty much worked out for me.

Maybe in addition to tying night we should also have on the water streamer and strip set clinic. My original wording for that sentence didn't seem like it had anything to do with fishing...

We're having a strip contest at Trout Camp? I think we're going to need some more liquor and maybe some edibles....
